More often than not, blood is thicker than water—or so the saying goes… When we head to Baton Rouge, two questions echo louder than the stadium roar: 1. Is Brian Kelly truly prepped to deliver a statement opener for the Tigers in 2025? And 2. Can Garrett Nussmeier stay composed, keep the offense breathing, or will he crack under pressure and start tossing picks like candy? Throughout LSU’s 2024 conquest, nothing has been more true than Brian Kelly’s failure to form a run game around Nuss. In short, “It’s impressive they (LSU) won eight games last year with how bad they were running the football.” Now, when you sum it all up—the pressure, a fifth-year QB, and an uncertain future—Kelly’s run as LSU’s head coach starts to look less like a championship push and more like a ticking clock.
But credit where credit is due, Kelly has tried. With the onset of the 2025 recruiting season, LSU has tried to completely revamp its offense. However, while chasing ghosts of the past, did Brian Kelly and LSU just fumble their shot at locking down their potential 2027 QB1? “All Glory to God!! Thankful to have received an offer from the University of Louisville.” Calling Colton Nussmeier the “rising star” from Texas would be an understatement. In a short time, this Marcus High sophomore has managed to collect more than 20 college offers. If anything, this could probably be the second coming of Doug Nussmeier—but will LSU get a chance to reap the fruits?

Well, that is a question the fans have to ponder for a little longer. While the Tigers have eyed their future on Colton’s shoulders—actually getting him onboard? That is a hefty task. LSU and Kelly fumbling big-time recruits is not new to us or the Tigers’ fans—psst, Underwood flip. Now, it looks like the same fate awaits Colton’s recruitment.
See, from the Cards’ perspective, Jeff Brohm has found his starter in Trojans transfer Miller Moss, and to back up QB1, Louisville has Brady Allen ready. If things go the way Brohm has planned, then Moss goes off to the NFL and Allen becomes the new starting quarterback of the Cardinals—leaving the backup/potential starter job for Colton.
Or.
Allen remains the backup, and Colton becomes the replacement for Moss. This is something to think about, but that narrative will only sail based on how Kelly plays the bidding war. LSU already whiffed on the Bryce Underwood sweepstakes—a miss that could’ve secured their QB spot for the next four years.
With Nussmeier heading into his final season and the room thinning to just Michael Van Buren and Ju’Juan Johnson, the self-proclaimed “Portal King” better pull out some new tricks if he wants to keep the Tigers’ future from crumbling.
Else, that gigantic piece of steak-flavored Texas talent is going to some other SEC camp.
20+ offers for Colton Nussmeier
No.2 quarterback coming out of Texas. This saga is shaping up to be more historic than Underwood and Julian Lewis’ million-dollar flips because this time all the heavy hitters are coming in to play. We already know LSU and the Cards are in the game. However, did you know Florida joined the race as well? Yeah, Gators want a piece of this Texas steak.
Still, out of all the 20+ offers, the one that truly stands out the most is the call from Tuscaloosa. A bit of history: Colton watched his father coach the Crimson Tide to a national title in 2012. This was prime Nick Saban days, and Doug was on the staff at the Crimson Tide.
When you let a kid watch something that historic, it’s natural; it is going to leave a lasting impact. We wouldn’t be surprised if the young Nuss opts for a Bama scholarship only for nostalgia’s sake—freaking anyone would. With Nick Sheridan already on the paper trail of Colton’s recruitment, we could end up watching LSU lose another big-time player.
Oh, Kelly, please don’t mess this up.
