Giants’ Brian Daboll Wants Saquon Barkley Payback as Nick Sirianni Gives Up on 4,085-YD Eagles Star

“I’m going to have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia.” Giants owner John Mara said last year, before their star running back made his biggest nightmare come true. Saquon Barkley’s move from New York to Philadelphia didn’t turn out to be just another cross-division move. Ever since he landed in Philadelphia, Barkley has not left a single opportunity to make the Giants regret their decision of letting him go. His first season in Philly turned out to be a historical one. Setting numerous rushing yards franchise records, a Super Bowl, an Offensive Player of the Year and whatnot. So, to forget last season’s nightmarish decision to let Barkley earn a move to the Eagles, the Giants are possibly plotting a payback of their own. This time, the rumors suggest the Giants are looking to bring Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run hero.

Eagles may have had Saquon Barkley terrorize defenses throughout the regular season. Rushing over 2,000 yards and 278 receiving, no one had any clue on how to stop the unstoppable Barkley. But once the postseason arrived and the stakes became higher, franchises started figuring out Barkley’s explosive moves. He may have rushed for another 499 yards, but on the receiving front, he struggled. His dual-threat capabilities were exposed as Barkley was limited to just 13 receptions for 75 yards.

Even the receivers, DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown, couldn’t conjure a spark. Smith had only 16 catches for 190 yards while Brown had just 12 for 163 yards. So, with several star wideouts underperforming, the Eagles turned to their 7-year veteran TE, Dallas Goedert. When others couldn’t step up, Goedert was a beast. He led the whole Eagles receiving front with 17 catches for 215 yards and one TD in the postseason. After underperforming in the regular season, playing only 10 games, catching just 42 passes for 496 yards, Goedert’s sensational postseason helped the Eagles capture their second Lombardi.

Now, as he approaches the end of his lucrative 4-year, $57M extension, the Giants are said to be interested in the Eagles’ postseason hero. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan said on Giants After Dark, “I heard at one point they looked into Dallas Goedert. He sounds like a guy who is going to get traded at some point in this draft.” Goedert, who carries a $11.7M cap hit on the final year of his deal, may be shipped off somewhere else before the new season. But will it be the Giants? Well, Raanan isn’t sure himself either.

“Now, I am not expecting Dallas Goedert to get traded to the Giants, but the fact that they checked in on it definitely made me scratch my head a little..It’s something they are at least monitoring,” Raanan added. As for the Eagles, they are set to hold out for at least a 4th-round pick for their Super Bowl Champion TE. So, the Giants may already know the price to land the veteran tight end. Will they make a move for him? Well, that’s something that needs to be monitored. But one thing is for certain: if Dallas stays, he might end up being a surplus to the Eagles’ TE room.

Dallas Goedert’s future in Philly looks darker than ever

This offseason, the Eagles have heavily invested in strengthening their tight end room. Kylen Granson and Harrison Bryant have joined Grant Calcaterra as possible backups if Goedert somehow ends up staying. But obviously, the chances of him staying put might be unrealistic. Sooner or later, the Eagles will definitely trade away Goedert. The financials related to his deal may force the Eagles to move on even if they don’t want to. Goedert’s $57M contract doesn’t have any guaranteed money left anymore. However, cutting or trading him before June 1 would cost $9.5M against the cap. But if they chose to do it post-June 1, it would save the Eagles $4.1M in cap space.

So, the question is, will they move him or not? With the draft coming up, the Eagles might bring in a young TE to ideally replace Goedert. Sitting at No.32, they might not get Penn State’s Tyler Warren or Michigan’s Colston Loveland. However, a possible Day 2 pick, like Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. or Miami’s Elijah Arroyo, could be an option. Yet again, it depends on their need. Goedert’s last year backup, Calcaterra, started 13 games last season. So, there is a possibility he might step up as a starter if Goedert leaves.

Or the Eagles can bring a project TE that can slowly develop in his rookie year. Only time will tell what’s gonna happen to Goedert. Either he can make the Eagles look foolish by hitting Barkley’s levels somewhere else. Or he can stay where he is and fight for his place for at least another year.
