Golf World Livid as Round of $9.9M PGA Tour Event Halts Abruptly: Getting Out of Hand’

Mother Nature has once again taken her toll on the PGA Tour’s premier tournament, the CJ CUP Byron Nelson. As reported by the PGA Tour, lightning in the region caused play to be suspended at 9:46 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025. With projections indicating severe storms throughout the day, the suspension was implemented as thunderstorms threatened TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

First-round leader Scottie Scheffler was 12-under for the tournament at the time of suspension, having shot 2-under-par through nine holes. Scheffler, who had begun the round on the back nine, led Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas by two shots when he famously eagled the par-5 18th hole. “Storms continue in the area and second-round play remains suspended,” the PGA Tour tweeted.

Fans express frustration over delays and communication

Fans’ annoyance has increased as a result of the play suspension, which has also interrupted the competition. “Getting out of hand smfh wtf,” said one fan, expressing their frustration. Another expressed disapproval of the communication lag, stating, “3 hours we had to wait for this update.” One admirer said, “What’s the point of a communications account if there is no communication!” in an attempt to find humor in the situation.

Others, however, claimed that the PGA Tour was abusing the weather, with one fan saying, “More excuses for lift, clean, and CHEAT.” One fan said, “If my wedding was outside in this type of weather we wouldn’t suspend it,” illustrating how frustrated they were with parallels to private ceremonies. These responses demonstrate the growing dissatisfaction among golf fans who believe the PGA Tour has not done enough to handle weather-related communication and disruptions.

In order to preserve the confidence and involvement of its fan base, the PGA Tour needs to solve the issues that the CJ CUP Byron Nelson is facing on and off the course.
