If you’re a fan of Tiger Woods, you better not ask Greg Norman for a quick comparison between his bestie Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. If you’re wondering “why?” then it has greatly to do with how much Greg Norman adores Jack Nicklaus. And what about Tiger Woods? Well, if you are asking Norman, he hasn’t ever properly talked to the GOAT.
Norman sat down for an interview with Graham Bensinger almost a decade ago. Collecting all the hot topics, Bensinger asked Norman what he thought of Tiger Woods, both personally and as a player. His answer? “Personally, I don’t know him. Even though we live half a mile from each other.” He shared that the two shared maybe “four words” during the Presidents Cup. But nothing besides that. Compare that to Jack Nicklaus’s arrival in the same place. Greg Norman reached out to him. When faced with the question about the world’s suspicion of trouble between him and Tiger Woods, he defended himself by saying, “That’s just the media.” But, hey, Greg Norman from 2025 will not say that.
A few days ago, Greg Norman was present at the Society of the Four Arts. There, once again, he was asked to draw comparisons between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. So, who’s the winner, Greg Norman? Norman’s answer was as blunt as it could be. Hear him out.
“Jack, by far. But you’ve got to put that in perspective. You look at the different eras that happened. I always put Jack down there. Tiger’s extremely consistent, Tiger’s extremely good. There’s no question about it. But Jack has done more, and he is the consummate winner and he is the consummate loser.” Ouch, indeed. But Norman wasn’t done.
“Jack will always instill value into the younger generation. I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it and I’ve been involved with it, so that’s why I keep Jack up there. I don’t talk to Tiger. I don’t know. Maybe he’s different. I’ve spent a lot of time with Jack, so it’s going to be very hard for anybody to get me to bump him off the top of his pedestal.”
