Mark Coleman is one of those fighters who’s “about that life.” We don’t just mean that with regard to his fighting career. Instead, we’re alluding to an incident where Coleman ran head-first into a fire to save his family and dog. As a result, the aging UFC veteran suffered breathing complications for which he had to be hospitalized. That was in March last year. Cut to the present day, and his health complications have arisen once again.
The former UFC fighter took to his Instagram handle to share of picture of himself on the hospital bed with the caption, “Been having some chest pains recently, it got worse today so I decided to get checked out. It’s in God‘s hands so everything‘s gonna be all right. I could use extra prayers. They always help. Have a great live life to its fullest tomorrow’s not promised.”
It must be noted that despite previously being released from the hospital, Mark Coleman had to make regular visits to the infirmary for checkups. Additionally, last July, Coleman shared a health update on social media, revealing that he had to undergo surgery due to an infection. “Back in the hospital again. My hip is septically infected. They’re going to do emergency surgery today. But I’m on blood thinners.”

He further added, “So they’re going to have to wait until Monday. So I’m gonna hang out here for the weekend. All’s gonna be fine, sober’s cool. Carnivore diet, nine ancestral tenants. Hammer house for life, who’s in?”‘ Mark Coleman’s stints with failing health are not new. Back in 2020, Coleman had to be admitted to the hospital as he complained about a sudden sting in his chest and arm.
Medical professionals revealed that the fighter had a minor stroke which had no life-threatening implications for him but could prove to be fatal in the future. They further revealed that the former fighter had a blockage in his artery which was later removed through surgery. At the peak of his career, Mark Coleman struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse. Let’s take a closer look at the revelation Coleman made about his struggles in 2023.
Mark Coleman’s struggles with addiction
Through an Instagram post, Mark Coleman shared details about overcoming his addiction. ‘The Hammer’ opened up about his struggles saying, “I am a former alcoholic and dr-g addict. 2 1/2 yrs ago I quit but for two years. Something was missing.” He then added, “I hadn’t exercised in 12 years, staying away from drugs. And alcohol was very very difficult [for me to quit] and then I started walking, and I never stopped people [who] keep telling me I need to slow down and sit on the couch.”
Coleman asserted to have used intense training as a way of dealing with his addiction, “I’ve traded my addiction for drugs and alcohol for exercise. I thought maybe I overdid it yesterday, the pain is real but real good. I didn’t sleep, I couldn’t sleep, I haven’t slept, and I don’t think I overdid it.” ‘The Hammer’ concluded the post by saying, “Yes I do take risks. So far all is good and all keeps getting better and stronger solver is core carnivore diet [and the] nine ancestral tenants”
One of the best ways of overcoming addiction of any kind is through physical exertion. UFC lightweight Jared Gordon used a combination of professional help and fighting as a means to overcome his substance abuse issues. Alex Pereira is another example of a fighter who used fighting as a means to combat alcoholism – something that plagued him since he was a teenager. With Coleman, it just isn’t the issue with his addiction, but also his health since he’s an aging veteran at 59.
