HC Rod Brind’Amour Reveals Mikko Rantanen’s Shocking Response to His Carolina Hurricanes’ Trade

The Mikko Rantanen trade saga continues to surprise long after the trade deadline.

In a recent conversation on Canes Corner with Adam Gold, the Hurricanes head coach revealed, “When [Rantanen] showed up, he said, ‘There’s four teams I’ll go play for, and you’re not one of them.’ And the question is, should we have known that before we signed him?”

The head coach also added, “Mikko was the only one that I’ve been associated with that said, ‘This is not for me.’ I think there are other circumstances. It’s not because of hockey, it’s because, I think, his family — it wasn’t for him. Good, I appreciate that. he let us know that. We probably should’ve known that before we made the deal. Maybe that changes how we go about things.”

The Dallas Stars and the Toronto Maple Leafs were Mikko’s top priorities. In exchange for him, the Canes picked up 22-year-old forward Logan Stankoven, a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a conditional first-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, a third-round pick in the 2026 draft, and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
