Is Tom Aspinall the bane of Jon Jones’ existence? Nah, Daniel Cormier already played that role. No, the real adversary of Jones’ MMA career is that 12-to-6 elbow he battered Matt Hamill with. Jon Jones pleaded with Dana White to reverse his loss against Matt Hamill after 12-to-6 elbows were made legal in the UFC. Despite the head honcho’s best efforts, the blemish on his record will remain eternal. After Demetrious Johnson got some pushback for stating this issue, he decided to remain strong on his word.
Johnson, the former UFC flyweight champion, appeared on the JAXXON podcast, where he indulged in a discussion with the host, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, and in that episode, he stated, “He did lose. He lost to Matt Hamill. Yep, he f*****g lost. He broke the rules. A loss is a loss. Whether you win by a second or five miles, winning is winning. 28 wins and one loss, he lost to Matt Hamill.”
Since ‘Mighty Mouse’ is facing some backlash for his comments on Jon Jones’ first loss, he has clarified his stance on the issue in an interview with MMA Junkie by stating the following, “Now we look at Jon Jones situation. At the time, yes, Jon Jones was beating the s*** outta Matt Hamill. Matt Hamill got lucky as f**k that he got that W over Jon Jones. But at the end of the day, Jon Jones has lost because he broke the rule.”
He further added, “And that’s it, I feel I were to lie, and say Jon Jones, ‘Man! Of course he won that fight man! It didn’t matter duh.’ That’d be me, going against my rule, my morals, and what law is. I have nothing but love for Jon Jones, me staying at Jon Jones loss, has an L on his record, do you think that’s gonna change the perception of people’s mind of him as a GOAT? Even to this day, I still believe, Jon Jones is the greatest of all time. Doesn’t matter if I get flak or not, that’s how I see it.”

Demetrious Johnson makes a compelling point. While a loss might sting a little bit, it doesn’t dismiss the legacy that Jon Jones has inside the UFC. Reasons for losses can vary and it’s important to remember that sometimes they come from unique circumstances. A perfect example is former bantamweight champion Petr Yan, who lost his title to Aljamain Sterling because of a disqualification due to kneeing a grounded opponent.
This incident highlights that setbacks can happen in a competition, but they don’t define a fighter’s entire career or their contributions to the sport. Jones’ achievements stand tall, proving that one misstep doesn’t erase years of dominance and skill in the Octagon. It’s a pleasure to see ‘Mighty Mouse’ active with his viewpoints on various issues. But, who knows? He might change his mind and fight again! At least, he’s receiving lucrative offers.
Demetrious Johnson reveals receiving many offers to comeback even after his retirement
‘Mighty Mouse’, as a legend, has left fans inspired after saying goodbye to the sport in September, last year. He has acknowledged the fact that every fighter reaches a point where they have to stop and think about the future beyond a fighting career. And he firmly believes that the time was right for him to bid adieu.
Demetrious Johnson, after establishing his legacy in the UFC, was traded to ONE Championship, where he showcased his skills against Adriano Morales and Rodtang. However, on September 6, 2024, he announced his retirement from the sport. Despite stepping away, he continues to receive offers to return to competition.
In the same interview with MMA Junkie, DJ said, “I’ve had offers come in. I’ve had great offers. Had a few offers come in, and I’m like, ‘No, I’m good,’ because I feel I try to be a man of my word. I told myself that I was never going to take a fight to make money. Those days of using my body to make money are over. I’m not going to sign a contract and go fight.”
‘Mighty Mouse’ is not just a high-IQ fighter, he’s extremely smart outside the confines of fighting. Why do we say this? While actively fighting, he invested time in setting up his career in gaming, and a future career as a content creator. Today, he is reaping the benefits of those investments after being happily retired. What do you think of Demetrious Johnson’s life after fighting? Do you think we’ll ever see him back, competing?
