“I’m Shook Up”: Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, & More Grieve Boxing Legend George Foreman’s Devastating Death

Legends are becoming memories with heartbreaking losses hitting the sports world. After the recent passing of former NBA stars like Junior Bridgeman and Oliver Miller, tragedy has now struck boxing. On Friday, the legendary George Foreman passed away at the age of 76. His family confirmed the devastating news on Instagram, sending shockwaves through the sports community.

“Our hearts are broken,” the Foreman family’s statement read. “With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a dedicated husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”

As the news spread, tributes poured in from across the sporting world. And of course, the basketball community, in particular, shared in the grief.

Charles Barkley, speaking on Inside the NBA, reflected on Foreman’s loss. It’s been a rough, I ain’t gonna lie, between Junior Bridgman, Oliver Miller, it’s been a rough week, and now Mr. Foreman, when that thing came out, it hurts a lot, because he was obviously one of the greatest boxers ever, but just a gentleman, was a pastor, and it just hurts, man.

Then he shared condolence to the Foreman family. It’s just plain and simple. There’s nothing I can say. My condolences to his family, and I’m shook up right now, because that caught me so off guard,” Charles Barkley said.

Magic Johnson also shared a heartfelt tribute to the boxing legend. “I was really sad to hear the news that one of my boxing heroes, George Foreman, passing away. I attended so many of George’s championship fights over his career,” he wrote on X. “He was a knockout artist in the ring, and it was a pleasure getting to know him not only as a boxer but as a man. After leaving the ring, he turned into an amazing businessman — I even bought one of the first George Foreman grills! Cookie and I will be praying for his family during this time. ”

Other former NBA stars also paid their respects.  Former player Eddie Johnson acknowledged the loss with a heartfelt post featuring a praying hands emoji. Dwight Howard wrote on his X, “R.I.P George Foreman .” Six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen also expressed, “Rest in peace, George Foreman. Your legacy lives on, champ .”

Adding to the tributes, former NBA player and coach Mark Jackson honored Foreman on Instagram. “Thank you, Champ, for your Example!!! Thoughts and Prayers to the Family, Friends, and Fans of The Legend Big George Foreman!” he wrote.

The sports world has lost a true icon, but Foreman’s legacy will forever stand tall.
