Indiana Fever Give Distasteful Response to DeWanna Bonner’s Return to Mercury After Shocking Trade

DeWanna Bonner— that’s a name that became a mystery for Indiana Fever fans, and they’ve got a reason, too. Well, when she signed with the team in February as part of a rush of good news, it seemed like a guaranteed move to markedly improve the Fever’s season. After all, she had entered 2025 free agency in high demand, as a two-time WNBA champion and the league’s fourth-leading scorer. But as impressive as her résumé sounded, things didn’t pan out the way Indiana had hoped. And now, with Bonner returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse wearing a Phoenix Mercury jersey, Fever fans had her arrival marked on their calendar. Not in a sweet way, though!

Despite having played at Gainbridge for just a month earlier this season, Bonner heard the fans—and their feelings—loud and clear. The moment she stepped onto the court, boos rained down. They only grew louder when she walked to the free-throw line after drawing a shooting foul.

And that wasn’t the end of it. Some fans took it a step further, yelling “quitter” from the stands—a not-so-subtle jab at the veteran’s decision to part ways with the Fever after just nine games. For someone who was hailed as a prized offseason signing, Bonner’s sudden exit stung.

Especially considering she was brought in for her championship pedigree and veteran leadership, her performance fell short—averaging career-lows of 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. She eventually requested a trade, citing a lack of on-court chemistry, and was waived after the team couldn’t find a suitable trade partner.

And while her reunion with the Mercury and fiancée Alyssa Thomas may have been a personal victory, Fever fans haven’t forgotten how things ended.
