The team, which was supposed to be ‘more dangerous without Caitlin Clark,’ immediately showed why it is not. After a 2 match winning streak, Carolyn Peck, an ESPN Analyst, pegged the Fever to be functioning better without Clark. It was too early to say that, and the team lost against a Sparks team that has struggled this season.
The scoreline of 89-87 doesn’t seem that bad at first glance. But the Fever once led by 8 points and only faltered in the last two quarters. Clark brings that extra punch essential to win games like these. Now, she will be back after a five-game break because of her groin injury. The Fever management took no risks this time around and continued their work on the court without being too focused on Clark’s absence. The updates regarding her were also limited, which left the fans struggling for information. While the fans were left in the dark, it was ultimately good for the team, according to this national analyst.
Rachel De Mita said on her Courtside Club podcast, “It seems like the Indiana Fever are keeping this injury in particular really close to the team. They haven’t given much information about it, and I honestly think that that’s a good thing.”
When Clark was injured the first time around with a left quadriceps strain, the franchise announced the exact injury and the time she would be missing. While this time around, White repeatedly said that she is day-to-day and that she has a groin injury. The team did not give any details otherwise.
Because of this, the focus remained on winning games, and not just waiting around for Clark to return. The press conferences would usually have just one question about the update of her injury, but since White almost had the same answer every time, that frequency also decreased. The team adapted effectively as they have a 3-2 record this around and let Clark recover at her own pace. There was another advantage to keeping the cards regarding Clark’s injury close to their chest, as De Mita further pointed out.
She said, “Because, like we’ve talked about before, other teams can use injury information against Caitlin and against the Indiana Fever if they know how to guard her, if they guard her in a certain way. And so I think overall it’s just a good thing they’re they’re keeping it tight-lipped and we’ll just have to see how she performs on the court.”
The short period between injuries, when Clark played three games which she could have been rushed back sooner than needed, she went through a rough patch. The Indiana Fever star, who’s typically a sharpshooter from long range, is 1-for-23 from 3-pointers over the three games. Her accuracy also decreased as she shot 21.4%,35% and 23% as opposed to her season average of 39% which used to be above 40% but came down because of these three games.
Part of the reason for this slump, according to the experts, could be a mix of psychological, emotional, and physical issues. But also, other teams figured out one of the flaws that emerged because of her injury. In 2025, till her injury, she was averaging 22.2% while shooting threes from the left of the basket, while she was averaging 44.4% from the right.
Caitlin Clark’s recent shooting slump may be linked to her left quadriceps strain, as her shot chart from last season showed no significant weakness on either side of the court. She averaged 35.3 % shooting from the right side and 36.1% from the left, indicating a balanced performance. This suggests that the current drop-off could be a result of the injury. Since the Indiana Fever chose to keep the injury details private, opposing teams have not been able to tailor their defensive strategies to exploit it. This gives Clark a chance to reset, recover, and work her way back to her normal shooting form without added pressure or predictability.
With Clark’s Return, Can Fever Finally Pull Away From 0.500?
Clark or no Clark, the Fever team has been largely inconsistent. They haven’t had a winning streak of over 2 wins and a losing streak longer than 3 losses. That losing streak was when Cark was injured last time around, and they couldn’t cope with her absence. The team has improved greatly since then and even went through a turbulent DeWanna Bonner situation. The player and the team fell out, and she has moved to the Phoenix Mercury, receiving her wish. To replace her, they have brought in Aari McDonald, who has been exceptional in her time here.
This inconsistency was evident when Indiana followed up an impressive win with a disappointing loss. Two days after holding the Las Vegas Aces to their lowest point total since they moved to Vegas, the Fever suffered a setback against the Los Angeles Sparks, squandering a late lead and failing to execute on several key possessions in a narrow loss. The loss dropped the Fever to 9-9, the seventh time this season they’ve had a .500 record.
“This is a group that’s pretty locked in in terms of their energy, their effort, and understanding what we’re trying to do, but it takes another gear sometimes,” White said after the Fever’s loss to the Sparks. “If there’s physical tiredness, we have to combat that with mental sharpness.”

Tiredness or mental pressure, whatever the reason might be, an inconsistent size will falter when it comes to the big moments. This is when Clark comes in and becomes the difference maker. If she comes back to her normal form and starts dictating the offense with some new tactics involving McDonald, they can find that consistency. They have a lot more tools to play with now than they had at the beginning of the season. Clark will bring that X factor, and a proper guard will help organize the offense and defense better. Her comeback right now means she also has plenty of time for the All-Star game, where she will lead against Napheesa Collier. Along with that, the attendance and viewership will also spike because of Clark’s return.
While the Fever have shown flashes of potential, their inconsistency has kept them from breaking through as a true contender. With Caitlin Clark returning to full strength and Aari McDonald emerging as a key contributor, the team now has more ways than ever to find balance and stability. If Clark can regain her form and lead the offense with renewed confidence, Indiana has a real opportunity to finally move beyond the .500 mark and establish itself as a playoff-caliber team.
