Isaac Cruz is making sure that Gervonta “Tank” Davis knows exactly what’s coming for him in 2025. The firestorm started when Cruz made it clear that he was gunning for a rematch with the WBA lightweight champion a few days before his fight with Angel Fierro. The former WBA super lightweight champion had some strong words about what he feels he deserves. And it wasn’t just bravado or empty talk—it was a direct response to an insult from Tank himself.
In just a few hours, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz will step into the ring at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to face the 23-2 boxer. This matchup would be one of the undercards of the highly anticipated David Benavidez vs. David Morrell showdown. For Isaac Cruz, this fight is more than just another bout—it’s a chance at redemption. But beyond Fierro, the 26-year-old has his sights set on a bigger target. If he emerges victorious, he knows exactly who he wants next.
Isaac Cruz determined to earn the rematch
A few days before his fight against Angel Fierro, Pitbull appeared in a post shared by ‘atsboxing’. The caption read, “Pitbull Cruz wants to show out and earn a rematch with Tank in 2025,” and in the accompanying video, Cruz left no room for doubt. Isaac Cruz shared that no matter where he goes—whether in Mexico, the U.S., or even at the airport—fans constantly ask him about a second fight with Davis. “I walk down the street both in Mexico, and here in the US, at the airport or wherever I am. The one fight that fans always ask for is the Gervonta Davis rematch,” he stated. The reason?
Issac Cruz remains one of only two boxers and the only one in the last 10 years to take Gervonta Davis the entire 12-round distance. Though he lost on the scorecards, for many including Mike Tyson, Pitbull gave Tank his toughest fight. And for that reason, Pitbull passionately declared, “And I’ll tell you what. We’re gonna be asking for the rematch in the not too distant future. I deserve it. I want it. And it’s coming.”
His words carry weight, as a rematch with Gervonta Davis would be a major event in boxing. For Isaac Cruz, securing a second bout against Tank Davis would not only be an opportunity for redemption but also a career-defining moment. However, the former WBA Super Lightweight champion’s call for a rematch wasn’t something he woke up one day and decided to share without context. He felt compelled to clarify his stance after Tank Davis’ recent disrespect.
Gervonta Davis and the “cakewalk” jibe
Last Sunday, Gervonta Davis made waves on X when he took an aim at both Ryan Garcia and Isaac Cruz, dismissing a fan’s claim that Cruz was Tank’s toughest opponent. His words were clear: “Pit bull was cake walk too.”
However, their 2021 fight tells a far different story than Tank Davis would like to admit. When Isaac Cruz stepped in on short notice after Rolly Romero was pulled from the fight, few expected him to be much of a challenge. But Cruz proved to be a nightmare for the Baltimore native, pushing him through all twelve rounds. Despite Davis winning by unanimous decision (113-115, 113-115, 112-116), the 26-year-old made sure it wasn’t an easy night for the 30-0, 28 KO boxer.
Isaac Cruz, who has only three losses on his record, is known for bouncing back stronger each time. And it was evident in his February 2015 knockout victory against Italo Ortiz, after losing a match against Luis Montano Alvarez. Not just that. Right after a loss against the Baltimore native, Pitbull Cruz snatched yet another knockout victory against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2022. The 26-3-1 boxer lost his last match against Jose Valenzuela in August 2024. However, with his fight just around the corner fans are now waiting to see what he brings to the table.
What do you think? Is he going to win the fight against Angel Fierro? Will Gervonta Davis accept the challenge, or will Cruz continue to be seen as the one who got away?
