Is There a Cut at Regions Tradition 2025? Format of Champions Tour Major Explored

The Regions Tradition isn’t just another senior golf tournament—it’s one of the five majors on the PGA TOUR Champions, and it consistently delivers some of the Tour’s most defining moments. Held annually at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Alabama, since 2016, it has become a cornerstone of the senior golf season. This year, it will be held from May 14 to May 18, 2025, and the field is stacked.

Brian Gay, currently 9th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, is one to watch, bringing steady play to the tournament. John Daly, known for his aggressive style, is set to tee off soon and could shake things up. Other strong contenders like Scott Dunlap and Ricardo Gonzalez, both top 5 in the Schwab Cup, add to the intensity. Every stroke will matter.

The 2025 Regions Tradition takes place over four days, unlike regular PGA Tour Champions events. The event will have a stroke play format, where players try to post the lowest total score over four rounds of 18 holes each. There’s no cut as usual, so all players will compete through every round and will have a fair chance of winning a substantial share of the total purse for the 2025 Regions Tradition, worth $2.6 million. The winner will be taking home $390,000, and the player finishing last will earn $1,300. This setup really shows how much the tournament values the skill and dedication of all the players.

With the 78 players in the field, the competition will be tough. The game can turn at any moment, and that’s what makes it worth watching. With live coverage on the Golf Channel and streaming on Peacock, fans everywhere will be glued to their screens. From Thursday to Friday, tune into the Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, turn on your devices from 2-5 p.m.

The defending champion of this year would be Doug Barron because of his obvious first major victory at the 2024 Regions Tradition with a score of 17-under-par 271, winning by two strokes over Steven Alker. While the first rounds haven’t started yet, the leaderboard preview reveals top players ready to make their mark. As we await this year’s play, last year was a heartbreaking finish for one of the veterans.

2024 Regions Tradition

Last year’s Regions Tradition saw a shocking moment when Steve Stricker, two-time consecutive title champion and one of the most consistent players on the senior tour, unexpectedly lost by three strokes to Barron. He told the associated media, “I’m tired. I’m old… three weeks in a row just doesn’t sound too appealing to me.” He blamed his fatigue for his loss. Nonetheless, fans were devastated, as many had hoped for Stricker to continue his winning streak, which made it one of the most talked-about moments in senior golf last year.

Even though Stricker didn’t win last year, fans still respect his strong legacy on the Champions Tour. The clock is ticking; the time is not far. Fans are eagerly watching to see if he redeems his title this year. So, will this year be a story of redemption, or will a new champion rise to claim their place in the Regions Tradition history? Guess we will find out soon enough.
