“It’s Very Upsetting” – Ex-UFC Champ Adds a Twist to Narrative on BJ Penn’s Mental Health

BJ Penn’s recent shenanigans have left fans deeply concerned. The UFC legend and MMA pioneer recently posted a troubling video claiming that his mother had been murdered and replaced by a clone — yes, really! While some, like Chael Sonnen, have suggested that the former two-division champion might be trolling, the overwhelming consensus is that something far more serious is at play. Many believe Penn’s mental well-being is in jeopardy, and urgent help may be necessary before things spiral further out of control.

In the unsettling video, Penn also claimed that his supposed clone mother was in his home to steal the Penn family’s fortune. He also expressed frustration that authorities refused to believe him, fueling concerns that the Hawaiian native may attempt to take matters into his own hands. With tensions rising, both Penn’s safety and that of his family are now major concerns. What’s particularly surprising is that Penn appeared to be doing well just a few weeks ago. UFC Hall of Famer and former 170lbs champ Matt Serra, who hosted ‘The Prodigy’ on his Geeking Out With Matt Serra podcast in late January, claimed Penn seemed completely fine at the time.

“You know, I’ve been hearing. I had BJ on my podcast, like three weeks ago… But, man, I fought BJ when I was 28, right? I’m 50 now. I love BJ, man. When you see him, he’s smiling, and I had on my podcast, we reminisced for like an hour. It was the old BJ, you know, no, but the thing is this– I made sure not to talk about politics or anything remotely close to politics, you know. So I got the old BJ with that interview… and I had a really good time reminiscing with him. But I did see that, I seen that today, and I heard other things. And, you know, it’s very upsetting. I hope he’s all right, you know, it’s just very upsetting,” Serra told BKFC’s ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry on the latter’s ‘Overdogs’ podcast.

Indeed, except for Penn having a horrible mic, the former two-division UFC champ did look normal. Penn, of course, beat Serra in their UFC 39 clash almost a quarter of a century ago. As you can imagine, the duo had a lot of catching up to do. The two veterans fondly reminisced about their fighting days and shared stories from the trenches with big smiles on their faces.

This makes Penn’s recent concerning behavior all the more concerning. However, as we have mentioned, UFC analyst and former superstar Chael Sonnen is holding out hope that Penn is just putting on an act, and it is worth taking a look at what he had to say.

Why does Chael Sonnen think BJ Penn is pulling the wool over fans’ eyes?

“I just know that I have seen BJ perform before. And he’s a very good performer. That would break my heart if this were true… I’ve known him too long. I’ve fought with BJ’s promotion, he’s been to Team Quest. We trained together, like, it’s different… You’re dealing with a very smart guy who was a promoter himself at one point. Before you go check BJ into the insane asylum, make sure it’s not you that’s being the fool,” ‘Uncle Chael’ said on his YouTube channel.

So Sonnen’s main argument is that he knows when Penn is acting, and he feels the Hawaiian was acting when he made that now-deleted video about his mother. And his second point is that ‘The Prodigy’ used to be a promoter, so he may be acting to promote something. However, neither argument is really convincing. Sonnen may well have a sense for telling when Penn is acting, but that is nothing more than an arbitrary feeling ‘Uncle Chael’ has. And if Penn is indeed trying to get eyeballs to try and promote something, the question still remains! What exactly does he want to promote?

The former UFC champ doesn’t have any upcoming fights, is not joining the GFL or the PFL nor does he have any products to launch right now. Not to mention, if Penn was indeed acting, wouldn’t he have come out and actually said something to alleviate fans’ alarming fear about him instead of just deleting the video and going silent?

We do hope that this is just a work from Penn and his recent behavior is not reflective of any other, more serious problems. But the evidence just doesn’t support that theory. It seems Penn is in real trouble right now and needs some help. Let’s hope he gets it before anything untoward happens. What do you think about Matt Serra’s take on BJ Penn’s behavior?
