“It’s Weird Doing an All-Girl Card”: Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano’s Historic All-Women’s Card Given Harsh Reality Check

In November last year, boxing saw new blood step into the boxing arena—Netflix. Their first event—an instant hit! YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul locked horns with Mike Tyson in a unique cross-generational boxing match, breaking several records. Now, Netflix is taking a second jab at boxing with their broadcast of the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano trilogy match. And this is a special one!

The fight, which will stream live on the platform on July 11th from Madison Square Garden in New York City, will have an all-women undercard. As Serrano tries for the third time to secure a win over the Irish undisputed super lightweight champion, Alycia Baumgardner will make her debut with Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions in the co-main event against undefeated WBA interim champion Jennifer Miranda

This historic event comes amid ongoing efforts from MVP, which has committed to elevating women in the sport. However, comedian and actor Andrew Schulz doesn’t seem to think it’s a great idea. “I think it’s weird doing an all-girl card,” he told Ariel Helwani in a recent interview. He explained that the pride comes from Taylor and Serrano headlining the event, not from the entire card being composed of women.

“I think one of the coolest things about [Katie Taylor & Amanda Serrano] headlining is that despite them being women, they would be the headlining fight…,” he said. “To me, that’s the super flex, not that it’s like all one gender. This is the first card of all women, who cares?” Taylor and Serrano were previously on the co-main event of Paul vs. Tyson and headlined the event in their first fight in 2022.

“I go to see boxing,” Schulz added during the interview. “I don’t go to see women boxing. I don’t go to see men boxing. I just go to see what the best fight is. I think making it a gender thing, to me, it undersells how big that’s gonna be.” While Schulz’s comments may start a controversy, Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn, Taylor’s promoter, just settled a lawsuit stemming from Taylor and Serrano’s first fight.

Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn settled an issue that started during Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano I

Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn have officially settled their legal dispute, clearing the way for their joint promotion of the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano trilogy fight. The multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit, filed by Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing against Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions in September 2022, was dismissed with prejudice by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York after an undisclosed settlement was reached.

The lawsuit stemmed from Paul’s allegations that Matchroom paid boxing judge Glenn Feldman to favor its fighters, referencing controversial scorecards in Taylor-Serrano I and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua II. Hearn denied the claims, leading to legal action seeking over $100 million in damages. Despite the lawsuit, Paul and Hearn worked together on Taylor-Serrano II in 2024 and will now co-promote the trilogy fight.

Having said that, whether the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano event turns out to be a success despite no fights involving men is yet to be seen. However, Andrew Schulz firmly believes it’s unnecessary. Do you agree with him?
