Last season, Jalen Milroe struggled to meet expectations due to significant fluctuations in his performance at Crimson Tide. Consequently, the NFL stock has suffered a heavy blow. However, the Alabama QB got a chance to fix things a couple of weeks ago at the Senior Bowl. He could really stand out and solidify his lost glory to the pro scouts, but what he did was quite the contrast. While his long ball was still there, Milroe wasn’t accurate in the short passing, and it looked like the nerves got the better of him.
However, you can’t unsee his talents. He has everything that a rookie QB should possess, but all he lacks is better execution in some areas.
Milroe’s draft stock continues to suffer
After a lackluster Super Bowl exposure, the NFL Network’s Chad Reuter released a three-round mock draft. Unsurprisingly, Reuter doesn’t see Milroe as a potential first-round pick. He places the former Tide signal caller at No. 52 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also, there have been swirling rumors that the Steelers scouts love Milroe’s talent and see him as a potential franchise quarterback. After an average 10-7 season, Mike Tomlin will look to add to his QB room. Milroe can be a strategic catch, but, as per analyst Greg Cosell, he still has some massive loopholes that can further hamper his NFL image.
”He’s not really a nuanced pocket player; he’s got a big arm, and he’s dynamically explosive as a runner, and he’s got a physical presence. I mean, this guy, when he runs, I mean, he almost looks like an old-school fullback with dynamic speed. I mean, there’s no question about that. I mean, he can take the multiple concepts in the designed quarterback run game to another level.” Greg Cosell came clean on the massive Milroe issues amidst the draft stock discussion. One bad season and a series of faults are there to look at and judge the QB phenom for his future with the league.
People went to a huge extreme to blame all of Bama’s offensive woes on the young QB. However, as his first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer noted, Milroe’s presence in the locker room was crucial for the program to make the jump from Nick Saban. He held the flock together when many players were considering deserting the Tide after Saban left.
When it comes to his performance, of course, he had bad days. But there were also glorious days. The game against the LSU Tigers when Jalen Milroe ran Brian Kelly’s team out of a playoff berth. Even against Georgia, the first half was sensational. After the Bulldogs made a comeback late in the 4th quarter, Milroe was there again, delivering a crucial pass to Ryan Williams to restore the lead. However, Cosell highlighted some areas that Milroe needs to focus on.
“But again, when it comes to the minutiae of the game, he needs some time to develop. I mean, this guy is like that. He certainly has the arm strength. He’s got an aggressive throwing mentality; he just doesn’t really have the nuance and the subtlety as a pocket passer with the footwork and the vision, the timing, and the anticipation to consistently pick the art of defense. He doesn’t have that right now,” the NFL draft analyst continued.
Following Alabama’s unexpected decline from collegiate dominance, Milroe enters the NFL with a sense of determination, yet he still has a chance to change one aspect of his life.
Jalen Milroe needs patience to keep the ball rolling
Long gone are the days when Alabama’s Jalen Milroe used to be a phenomenal discussion among the freaks. Quite understandably, after the Tide’s disappointing playoff snub, the hype hasn’t been the same. But this is just not the end of the world for Milroe. Numerous prominent figures in history have not initiated their careers as early-round picks, yet they have achieved remarkable success later in their careers. So, the idea of ending up in a similar elite rank as Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels isn’t far-fetched at all for Milroe.
All he needs to do is to be patient and constantly hustle for improvement. ”Jalen Milroe has to be developed, but his run tool is one of the most elite traits of any QB in the draft. A lot of patience is required, but there could be a really nice payoff down the road,” Daniel Jeremiah, host of the Move the Strike podcast, sees some light at the end of the tunnel.
However, the devastating Super Bowl issues are very real. Be it the series of fumbles or the faulty accuracy, Milroe has had a log over there. Coming into Mobile, Milroe was projected to be a second-round pick. But Barry Shuck on the Dawg podcast said he won’t be surprised if Milroe even goes in round 3! It will be an intriguing spree to see where he lands.
