For the second time this season, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Well, at least in the eyes of the umpiring crew. If you are unaware, the Yankees’ slugger found himself tossed yet again, this time during a high-stakes battle against the Reds. But while the ejection hurt the Yankees, who went on to lose 5-4, Chisholm shared his part of the story after the game.
So yeah, he was just as eccentric after the game. Typical Chisholm! Well, he is never one to shy away from a microphone or a moment. Expectedly, he didn’t hold back when recounting his side of the confrontation with the home plate umpire. And just as interesting was his take on how his captain and manager responded behind closed doors.
“I looked at him and I said, ‘Why are you looking at me?’ And that’s when I got tossed,” Chisholm said, explaining his ejection.
Yes, simply asking the umpire why he was staring, and voila, Chisholm got ejected. While Chisholm has the right to ask for a reason after a wrong call, it’s surprising that a mere query would result in an ejection. So, if this argument is anything to go by, there was nothing in the discussion between Chisholm and the umpire that warranted an ejection.
The initial wrong call happened when Chisholm was at the plate, facing a 2-0 pitch from Reds reliever Lyon Richardson. It was clearly shown that the ball was well below the strike zone. But the home plate umpire thought otherwise and called it a strike. What followed were a few words murmured between the two, and that was the end. Or was it?
Shortly afterwards, Chisholm returned to the field as an infielder and was suddenly seen charging toward the umpire. The reason? He was asking why the umpire was staring at him! That was the moment when things took a sudden turn. Soon after, Aaron Boone was seen trying to pull Chisholm away from the scene, while Boone was at his animated best. After the game, Chisholm revealed what was discussed with his manager and captain. “My skipper believes in me, and my skipper always is going to back me up,” he said.
Chisholm surely got backing from Boone here. The skipper further added that he didn’t wish to see Chisholm ejected, but things just happened that way, and it was absolutely not a great situation. From Boone’s perspective, it’s nothing new to back his players. Even if it has cost him more than 40 elections in his career.
Meanwhile, Aaron Judge also had a word with Chisholm: “I got in the dugout, and I was frustrated. Cap came up to me and Cap talked. I was still frustrated.” While Chisholm didn’t reveal what was said between them, we are certain that Judge could be the best antidote to contain his flamboyance. This year alone, we witnessed a barrage of wrong calls against Judge, including calling off a homer. But Judge’s reaction? Calm and composed.
Time for Jazz Chisholm to show some restraint
If you are a regular at the Yankees game, you would know that this is not the first time Chisholm has been ejected. Think back to the game against the Rays in April. Owing to his fiery attitude, he was ejected. There’s more!
Chisholm was also accused of breaking social media rules by taking a strong-worded jab at the blown calls. The result? He was served with a one-game suspension. Hence, this is the time for him to learn the importance of showing restraint. His skills at the plate are beyond any doubt. Moreover, his flexibility to take over any position is equally commendable. But his flamboyance is depriving the team just when he is needed most.

Especially with someone like Judge on the team, a minimum level of restraint is all that could be expected from the dugout. Considering how things are going for Chisholm, from taking a potshot at a Padres player to facing off with umpires, the Yankees can’t afford to lose their star slugger during the clutch situations.
The postseason is approaching, and the Yankees’ performance indicates a likely berth. But with Chisholm’s antics, the team is always at risk of losing a player at any time. Yes, wrong calls need to be called out, but doing so at the expense of the team is something worth restraining.
