If someone experienced a free fall in league, the 49ers are definitely one of them. CEO Jed York, HC Kyle Shanahan, & others saw them lose two consecutive NFC Championships before the Super Bowl LVIII against the Chiefs. In 2024, they couldn’t even qualify for the playoffs. It sent shockwaves in the league. Just like the captain of a sinking ship, the HC started getting rid of unnecessary players. But even he knows that the engine—their signal caller—has to remain in peak condition.
The CEO received real advice after having a mass exodus in the free agency. NFL analysts Mike Florio and Chris Simms discussed the situation on April 2 episode of the NFL on NBC. While talking about the QB situation, Florio told York to ditch their signal caller and said, “(York said) He’s (Brock Purdy) a top quarterback in combination with Kyle (Shanahan). Okay, so why are you going to pay him? Why are you tearing down your team to pay this guy when you could find somebody else who, in tandem with Kyle Shanahan, could be a top 10 guy?”
There’s nothing else they can say to Brock Purdy and their fanbase. There’s around 18 departures from the Niners this offseason. It includes WR Deebo Samuel and LB Dre Greenlaw. Florio and Simms even joked if York and Shanahan could form a solid a team from the remaining roster. Afterall, they have broken their tradition.
Usually, the teams get rid of their players after they reach a deal with their signal caller. This hasn’t happened in the NFC West franchise. The top 10 quarterbacks in the league earn $51 million APY or more. Will they pay Purdy in that range?
The analysts have contrary views on this. But even with all the comparisons, he must be having a $40+ million deal in his mind. While the team might have a different plan.
Jed York still hoping to pay Brock Purdy handsomely
After all the offseason drama, the 49ers CEO understood that fans were angry at him. But the franchise is walking in a different direction. They have high hopes of keeping the player for the foreseeable future. That’s the only hope of them changing their fortunes in the coming season.
Jed York explained his stance on the sacrifice part and said, “It’s just a math thing. When you make the decision that you want to pay a quarterback that has obviously been underpaid for his first three seasons in the NFL. When you make that change, you have to make sacrifices somewhere. It’s a decision that we made collectively, and we’re hoping that we make somebody the highest-paid player in the history of our franchise.”
The last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy, also earned the nickname Mr. Irrelevant. His rookie deal was 4-years $3.7 million. Questions still remain on the expected numbers for his new contract. And then, there’s a high chance that the 49ers can put things on hold till next year. But their rivals could try to poach the signal caller.
It’s clear that many things need to be finalized before the draft. Or else the locker room environment could go south in the Niners. They first need to fix their centerpiece before moving in other directions to assemble a lethal O-line around him. Now it’s a waiting game.
