As the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy, there were more questions hanging in the air than answers. Why did they decide to part ways with him? Who will actually succeed him? And, what is Jerry Jones up to? Well, the Cowboys did answer all of those questions with their latest announcement, but then it also came with its own mountain-load of questions. But why the buzz?
The Cowboys have just announced Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach. He had previously worked as an offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. And, already the internet and social media are flooded with posts about why a man with zero experience as a head coach is being given the job that will require no less than winning the Super Bowl. But, still, jones had a plan laid out in his mind and it seemed that he was the one strongly backing him to become the next HC.
Jones said in a statement, “You know, [you’d be] a first-time head coach, and I believe we’re hanging around the rim. I think we’ve got in place a team that can get there right now. I had other coaches tell me that were wanting the job, ‘[This team is] right there. Right there. I just can’t take the risk of going with someone that was doing it for the first time.” But, the last sentence was just a coy Jones was hiding, and then moments after, he announced Schottenheimer as the next Cowboys head coach. Notably, there were other candidates too…
Amongst the candidates that were considered for the job was Deion Sanders. The hype became even more intensified after Jones’s phone conversation with Sanders. Furthermore, the media was already getting mixed signals from Jones and Sanders’ future and so it continued. So much so that ESPN conducted an entire Monday Night Football talk show that revolved around Sanders and McCarthy’s sacking. But, it did stop at one point.
Well, Jones ultimately answered the media speculation about the Cowboys and Sanders and clarified that Sanders was never a candidate considered for the job. He said, “Just a conversation about the team, and about where he is, and his boys, conversation with his boys, that type of conversation. I’ve said I’ve talked to a lot of coaches, and Deion has a job (at Colorad0)”.
That means the Sanders project is officially on the backburner and Schottenheimer is the real deal now. But, Adam Schefter talking on ESPN’s ‘Get Up‘ show has an idea for Schotty.
Schefter provides clues to Cowboys’ woes
Well, Schefter first and foremost pointed to the woes Cowboys had faced in rushing plays in the past season. For context, the Eagles had more rushing TDs against the Cowboys in the December game than the Cowboys have in total in the season, as pointed out by Schefter and his co-hosts. And he is right, the Cowboys are ranked 27th overall in the NFL in rushing yards (100.3 per game) and desperately need a piece in their puzzle of who can make those lethal rushes. And, Schefter has an answer to that too…
He said, “Has there ever been a running back in one draft that is more perfect a fit than Ashton Jeanty is for the Dallas Cowboys at No. 12? We’re gonna wait for this to happen like, to me, it is so logical for them to go there because they have to do something at that spot to upgrade that position“.
But why is Ashton Jeanty perfect for the Cowboys? Well for starters he was the runner-up in the Heisman trophy votes last year, furthermore, he notched up almost 2,601 rushing yards in the season with 29 touchdowns. That was a feat comparable to Barry Sander’s FBS record season in 1988 when he finished with 2,628 yards. So, what can the Cowboys do to land him?
Well, Ashton Jeanty is someone who is touted as top 10 picks, but rarely as top 5. On the other hand, the ace QB Sheduer Sanders is a top 5 pick who was also reported to be joining his dad Deion Sanders to the Cowboys. His father even said previously in an appearance on Good Morning America, “The only way I would consider it is to coach my sons”. He was talking about taking his sons with him if he joins any NFL coaching team. But, now that the Sanders’ dad-son speculation has died down, the Cowboys can actually land Jeanty and rectify their rushing woes.
