Ever wondered how the Michigan Wolverines’ graph looked like? The squad counted on their faithful alumnus, Jim Harbaugh, who played for the team from 1982 to 1986. The result? Great! Harbaugh gifted the Wolverines the Natty, passing the ultimate quality test. While Michigan might have thought to keep Harbaugh close for a little longer, the universe had other plans. Harbaugh left Ann Arbor to serve in the pro league. That’s when the Wolverines were left with Sherrone Moore, and we all know how the graph had hit a nosedive. While Harbaugh is now flying high with the Los Angeles Chargers, will he make a comeback in college? FOX analyst got the answer, as he dished out a bitter pill for Moore to swallow.
The biggest turning point in Moore’s squad has been the sign-stealing controversy ft. Connor Stalions. Their 2023 season was marked by their on-field dominance and alleged off-field misdeeds. Harbaugh and co. embarked on an undefeated regular season and their third-consecutive Big Ten championship. However, the other side of the story dragged them down. According to various allegations, Michigan staffers attended games of upcoming Wolverines opponents and recorded the hand signals used by coaches. While Stalions had been the centre of the scandal, even Harbaugh got to face the blows. So much so, that he was suspended for the remaining season, missing out on games against Maryland and Ohio State. Sadly, the dark past has been recently dug up once again. This time, Moore is in the hot seat. Why so?
As per the reports, Moore is accused of deleting 52 text messages with Stalions around the time of the initial investigation, which is against NCAA rules. So, he is banned from two games- the Week 3 game against Central Michigan and the Week 4 Big Ten opener against Nebraska. That’s how the post-championship chapter has been tougher to handle for Moore’s squad than it has been for Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes. On May 9, this was then taken up by FOX Sports analyst RJ Young on The Number One College Football Show. He said, “Jim Harbaugh got the he- – up out of there because the hammer was always gonna come right and I don’t think the man actually wants to coach college football ever again.” Swapping to the pro leagues was the former head coach’s plan to whitewash his image.
So, Harbaugh’s next mission must be to bring the Super Bowl to the Chargers. Now, what about Moore? Young shared, “Sherrone Moore, we’re going to find out just what that dude is made of because now the staff is truly his. The guys that have gone have gone, the guys he stayed and kicked off.” Moore got rid of their offensive coordinator, Kirk Campbell, last December, and they have brought in Chip Lindsey to fill the position. The analyst continued, “You got Bryce Underwood, you paid $12 million for him. Good for you. Now you got to go win, you got to find receivers, you got to find a run game. And we think you’re going to have one right with Jordan Marshall and Justice Hayes.” But still, there are some loopholes in Moore’s blueprint.
The head coach needs to buckle up as he has lost an All-American trio. “It’s not a guarantee you got to find two other all-American defensive tackles, Kenneth Grant, Mason Graham are gone. Another all-American corner, Will Johnson, is gone. We’ll see just how healthy they are at by the time we play this game in November.” But what if Moore gets handed a more severe punishment?
Trouble mounting for Sherrone Moore beyond the two-game ban
Good times for Day’s Buckeyes. This is yet another time they are going to face off against the Michigan squad, which is not as talented as they are. Well, we are aware how Moore got to serve the two-game ban. But if the Michigan fans might have thought, that’s enough, it’s time to pop their bubbles. On the 247Sports podcast, the Michigan insider, Sam Webb, drew a bleak picture. He said, “It may not be two games,” in case the NCAA thinks that the ban is not enough punishment for Moore. Here, the NCAA is the one that is going to determine the punishment level for Moore. Turns out Webb was right.
Another analyst, NevadaBuck, too, stirred the pot in Moore’s case. He hinted at a fair chance for the Michigan head coach facing a show-cause penalty from the NCAA. “If Sherrone Moore gets a show cause, I don’t know exactly what the rules but Coach Meyer is under the impression, a lot of people are under the impression, that if you have a show cause, you can’t coach in college.” Here, Harbaugh stands as the biggest example. The former head coach had to wrap up his college football chapter and try his luck in the NFL.
That’s all about 2025 and his woes. However, Sherrone Moore can see some silver lining when it comes to the class of 2026. The Wolverines have been pursuing the Top 100 cornerback from Towson (Md.) Loyola Blakefield, Khary Adams. And guess what? Adams was wooed by the feel-at-home factor, defensive scheme. So much so, he will be flying off to Ann Arbor for an official visit. Fingers crossed Moore bounces back just in time for the 2026 season fireworks.
