Joe Flacco Sends Direct Message to Browns on Drafting Young QB, Clears Stance on Starting Role

Joe Flacco has had a massive career, and not just for the years he has spent in the game. NFL Comeback Player of the Year (2023), Super Bowl MVP, and Super Bowl Champion (LXVII), he has earned these titles through grit and sheer skills. Since his debut with the Ravens, all the way down to his latest one-year signing with the Browns, this is a guy who just doesn’t give in. And now, there’s something new cooking with our old QB.

But that’s not all that’s being discussed right now. Since he is getting older (he’s 40 now), questions have arisen about whether he has joined the Browns to continue the upward trajectory of his career, or to develop a new QB that could soon line up next to him. So, what’s going on?

As per recent reports by Dianna Russini, the Browns could be interested in signing Kirk Cousins as his exit from the Falcons looks extremely likely with them focusing solely on Michael Penix Jr now. While the rumor mills are spinning out stories one after the other, Flacco himself has a clear head when it comes to the prospect of a new QB joining their ranks. According to Andrew Siciliano, Flacco says, “I haven’t paid attention to the Draft in probably the last 14 or 15 years.” In another update from Scott Petrak, Flacco’s take is further clarified: “I won’t be paying attention. I’ll see who it is and wait to say hi until I see him in the building.”

If the Browns do end up drafting a new QB from the ranks of talent that are lined up this year, would he be showing them the ropes? Or would he be doing things his own way? Flacco is very clear in this regard as well, “I don’t think anybody ever really views themselves as a mentor solely as a mentor. I think we all want to go out there and compete and play.” He further added, “When you just have a competitive good quarterback room, you don’t really have to worry about being a mentor. You just kind of do you and you compete and you have fun and conversations come up and everybody learns from it.”

So, he doesn’t see himself as a mentor, instead, he sees it as a chance to learn from each other and constantly grow. Even with his experience, Joe Flacco has remained humble, especially when he says, “I still have things to learn – I think everybody kind of plays off each other in that room.” But that’s not where it all ends. He has a vision for the future, and he’s focused on developing that with everything he’s got.

Joe Flacco – starting or not?

When it comes to Joe Flacco, the goal he has for himself is simple, crisp, and clear. According to Scott Petrak, the 40-year-old QB says, “I want to play and I’m going to play until I can’t.” That’s MVP energy right there. Until the Browns signed him, he didn’t believe it was possible. As he puts it to Fred Greetham, “If you asked me two weeks before it actually happened, I would’ve said no way.” But he’s here now, and he’s staying for at least a year, per his $4M contract. Whether he will be starting or not is a question that has been up for debate, too.

Deshaun Watson’s recovery is still in question as he reels from his torn Achilles. Flacco says Browns HC Kevin Stefanski doesn’t have a “preconceived notion” on who could be the starting QB. If the Browns end up signing Kirk Cousins away from the Falcons, he will not be playing second, he has made that much clear already. So if that happens to pass, will Joe take a backseat and watch the games unfold? Or will Stefanski give him a chance to earn the “Comeback Player of the Year” once again, like he did with the Browns back in 2023?

Joe Flacco isn’t paying attention to the rumor mills. He’s not even looking over his shoulder for new QBs that could join the team. He’s competitive, fired up, and ready to play till he can’t. With this drive and energy, Flacco might just win our hearts again this new season. Watch out for the Browns this year, cause things are getting fired up.
