Joe Rogan Sets Alarm Bells Ringing on AI Bots Secretly Manipulating Americans

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has often engaged in topics surrounding artificial intelligence and its implications for mankind as we move ahead in time. Recently, a controversy popped up on Reddit as certain chatbots garnered attention for some “unauthorized” activity. The 55-year-old weighed in on the situation and shared a concerning message about computer programs of such nature.

The social media platform of Reddit has been a contentious topic of discussion in the digital world. The platform’s lawyer, Ben Lee, recently announced that they’ll be taking some serious legal action after researchers from the University of Zurich used AI chatbots, which were manipulative to users, including people in the United States, and violated Reddit’s guidelines, just for a survey. “We think this was wrong. We do not think that ‘it has not been done before’ is an excuse to do an experiment like this,” moderators wrote on a subreddit. Hearing this news, Joe Rogan decided to share the details surrounding the Reddit incident on his Instagram handle.

The 57-year-old podcast host is adamant that people take notice of things that happen in the digital space but often go under the radar. Given that reports claim the 13 bots in question collected all the information about a user before sharing a reply, and that they “crafted hyper-targeted persuasive arguments,” Joe Rogan believes there could be an endless number of such bots floating around on the internet.

“This is something that I think every person should know about. This is just one of these AI bot experiments that has been exposed, and there’s no telling how many more are active right now. The terrifying thing is how effective they are,” Joe Rogan wrote.

There is a lot to think about when we talk about AI, as Joe Rogan is warning us about it, because people who’ve worked to design and create AI technology have also sounded the alarm on this topic. In fact, one of the pioneers of AI spoke about it after quitting his job at Google.

AI expert’s warning, who worked for Google, backs Joe Rogan’s fear

Geoffrey Hinton, who resigned from his job at Google at the age of 75, claimed that he really didn’t enjoy working in one of the biggest tech companies in the world. While working on AI chatbots, he discovered some serious issues, which, just like Joe Rogan said, were terrifying to think about. Hinton, whose work has made way for ChatGPT and other AI systems available at our disposal, claims that things will be progressing really fast.

“Right now, they’re not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be… we’re seeing is things like GPT-4 eclipses a person in the amount of general knowledge it has and it eclipses them by a long way… And given the rate of progress, we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that,” Hinton told the BBC in 2023.

Well, technology is bound to develop as time goes on, and so there is no doubt that AI systems will be getting better and more capable in the future. With that, we can expect strict laws and regulations regarding the use of such chatbots, with some of them already existing. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how things pan out in the aftermath of the Reddit lawsuit, if the platform owners take the legal route.
