Carlos Prates and his UFC trajectory just make no sense! How can someone who smokes daily, drinks, and just isn’t very disciplined be such a killer? Yet, in spite of all things holy, ‘The Nightmare’ is perhaps the most hyped prospect in the 170-pound division, which has no shortage of world-class juggernauts. The Brazilian is currently on a four-fight unbeaten run in the promotion with a 100% knockout rate. Moreover, not a single bout has crossed the second round. This raises the question! What exactly makes the Brazilian such a killer? Well, we’ll let the inimitable Joe Rogan explain in his inimitable style.
“You got Carlos Prates, who’s a f—ing killer. Stone cold, Muay Thai killer who’s really hard to take down, and he’s just– 100% finishing rate in the UFC, I believe. He just knocked down Neil Magny, like he’s fu–s everybody up. He’s a sniper, like super, like skillful and slick Muay Thai guy. So their whole team [Fighting Nerds] is just killer, killer, killer….it is all killers. Just like a team of like brilliant up-and-coming killers,” Rogan told his friend and comedian, Joey Diaz, on episode #2309 of the JRE podcast.
But then again, so far, Prates has not really fought any elite-level guys so far. He indeed does have a 100% knockout rate in the UFC, but he has only fought four times in the promotion, as mentione,d with his best win coming against a 37-year-old Neil Magny last November. But that is about to change dramatically this weekend as ‘The Nightmare’ is set to face 170-pound golden boy, Ian Garry, atop the UFC Kansas City card on 26 April.

Garry, of course, was undefeated until his last fight, where he gave undefeated boogeyman Shavkat Rakhmonov the toughest fight of his career so far at UFC 310 last year. And if Prates can keep his 100% knockout rate after the fight with Garry, he would immediately find himself in the title picture. He may not get to fight for the title right away, even if he beats ‘The Future’, but he will be no more than one or, at most, two steps from a title shot. But Prates’ fellow welterweights aren’t too sure he would be able to pull it off against the prodigious Garry.
Belal Muhammad and Sean Brady make their picks for Carlos Prates vs. Ian Machado Garry
“Unfortunately, I’m going to pick Ian to win this fight. He has more ways to win than Carlos does. Obviously, Carlos could probably knock him out. Ian knows how to win. He’ll [strike] and f—ing run,” #1 ranked Sean Brady, coming off a dominant win over former champion Leon Edwards last month, said on his ‘BradyBagz Show’.
Indeed, Garry is nothing if not a very smart fighter. Although primarily a striker, Garry has developed a ground game under Charles Oliveira’s tutelage and used it to very good effect in his unanimous decision win over striker Michael ‘Venom’ Page at UFC 303 last year. So not only does the lightning-quick Garry have a point-fighting hit-and-get-out style to great effect against the destructive striker Prates, but he will also probably take him down and try to maul him there.
This is probably why even reigning welterweight champ, Belal Muhammad, has predicted that “I think Ian Garry gets it done this weekend.” This means that if Prates can pull off a win at Kansas City on Saturday, or even give Garry a close fight, he will have proved that he at least belongs at the highest level. What do you think about Joe Rogan’s take on Carlos Prates?
