Spending time around MMA folks definitely has its ups and downs, but one undeniable perk is the boost in confidence it gives you. Just ask Theo Von. On May 2, the ‘This Past Weekend’ host and Joe Rogan’s ‘best bud’ found himself in a heated moment when an alleged fan crossed the line, invading his privacy in a confrontational way. Theo didn’t hold back, and his response has since sparked a wave of reactions online.
So, what really happened? Theo Von was clearly caught off guard when he grabbed the throat of a man who was reportedly trying to get too close to the podcaster. The altercation took place at the Twelve Thirty Club in Nashville. Footage from the club, recorded on May 2, shows an unidentified man holding a number of golden birthday balloons, placing his hand on Von’s shoulder before the comedian had a chance to react.
Von then pushes the fan away from his throat and glares at him. For the unversed, this incident took place one day before Theo brought his stand-up tour “Return of the Rat” to Bridgestone Arena right across the street. TMZ also spoke with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, where it was confirmed that they responded to a misdemeanor assault complaint about the incident 2 days later.
The investigation determined there no action will be taken concerning the complaint. The video went viral and was even posted by TMZ TV on Instagram. And now, UFC legend Jon Jones has weighed in on the situation, adding more fire to an already buzzing situation. The undisputed heavyweight champion came out in support of his friend, saying, “Funny how you guys called this a—– a fan,” followed by a laughing emoji.
According to nearby witnesses, Von wanted to be left alone when the “golden balloon guy” and his friends approached him, attempting to get close to the podcaster. Further reports from TMZ suggest that the group of men were trying to mess with him on camera. When the media asked Theo Von about the incident, the podcaster chose not to comment on the matter. Weeks have passed since then, but the story is gaining traction now, with many fans sharing their own opinions. Some believe Von was forced to take action, while others think there’s more to the story.
Regardless, we might get a clarification from the podcaster in one of his upcoming episodes. Amidst this chaos, Jones has come to the support of his friend. Talking of ‘Bones,’ Tom Aspinall has something to say about his potential bout with Jones in the future.
Tom Aspinall weighs in on his weaknesses against Jon Jones
The heavyweight division has been struggling, largely due to the undisputed champion’s inactivity, who has yet to grant Tom Aspinall a title unification fight, even though Aspinall has held the interim belt for over a year now. The situation in the heavyweight division is so grim that rumours are coming in that the Briton would have to defend his title against Ciryl Gane after he defended it against Curtis Blaydes back at UFC 304.
Amidst all this, Aspinall has come forward to admit his weakness in the fight: “Well, he’s got a lot more experience than I do. He knows how to stay in there. He’s fought guys similar to me before. He’s had plenty like massive fight experience, where I’ve only main evented the UFC like four or five times now. He’s done that for the last fifteen years,” said Aspinall on the High Performance podcast.
He further added, “From the outside looking in, you probably think, ‘Oh, that’s a load of rubbish.’ Like, ‘What? It’s just a fight?’ But being in those… high-pressure situations, those massive fights, if you’ve been there a lot of times before in comparison to someone like me… it does make a big difference.”
Tom Aspinall understands that his lack of experience on the grand stage might work against him, but that doesn’t mean he’s backing down from the challenge of facing the heavyweight champion. Regardless, what are your thoughts on Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall? State your opinion in the comments below.
