The tension inside the D-Backs clubhouse seems to have hit a breaking point. A strange narrative has been pushed way too far around Ketel Marte as well. He’s been seen as a divisive figure in the clubhouse, per Bob Nightengale: “He can be a diva in the clubhouse, agitating his teammates and coaching staff.” Word has it that the heightened tensions within the organization have a lot to do with Marte’s demeanor. However, it’s all unfair targeting, as per Marte’s teammate, who is now urging the instigators to stop.
Before the Diamondbacks’ 5-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies, shortstop Geraldo Perdomo defended Ketel Marte amid all the rumors claiming that teammates and others in the organization were frustrated by the All-Star second baseman’s tendency to ask for days off.
All fired up, Perdomo made his feelings clear about his teammate and how much Marte truly means to him. “I want to get something clear about my teammate. I’m tired of this. It’s going to be for all reporters and all the writers. This is the second time something came out (about) Marte.”
Apparently, back during the All-Star break, Marte’s absence after the break-in made things tense, largely because the team was contending at that time. On top of that, he was also visibly shaken when a fan insulted his late mother earlier this season.
“I don’t want to speak as a teammate; I want to speak as a brother. He just wants to play baseball. Just leave the guy alone; it’s been too much for him. … I feel he doesn’t deserve that,” Perdomo added.
All of this combined chaos has fueled the discussion of a possible trade. And the Yankees find themselves in an interesting position. They do already have Jazz Chisholm Jr. handling second base. Yet, when a player of Marte’s caliber, who signed a 6-year, $116,500,000 contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks—currently slashing .298/.399/.558 with 23 homers and 56 RBI—suddenly becomes attainable, the priorities have a way of reshuffling.
A chance to grab an All-Star with proven offensive firepower is hard to ignore for Brian Cashman and his front office. However, what are the realistic chances of the Diamondbacks trading Marte?
The Diamondbacks will listen to offers for Ketel Marte
The MVP candidate Ketel Marte is very likely to be on the move this winter. This off-season, the Arizona Diamondbacks will reportedly listen to offers for the second baseman, as per Bob Nightengale. Further, the trade buzz around Marte stemmed from the reports of the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro. He dropped this bombshell report earlier this week. Nick noted that the club plans to field trade offers for All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this offseason.
The three-time All-Star is on pace for a stunning season, and the aforementioned stats vouch for that. The veteran switch-hitter was an MVP finalist in 2024 and has been a key piece for the Diamondbacks.
The D-Backs are just two-thirds of the way through a nightmare season. They were once seen as a potential contender in the NL West, and now, because of the injuries and pitching depth, they don’t look the same.
Now, if the Marte trade happens, where can he land? It could either be the Yankees, the Detroit Tigers, or the Seattle Mariners.
