Where’s the line for most fans when it comes to getting souvenirs from your favorite drivers? For Kyle Busch, it was a moment when he had to sign a diaper. That’s right, a diaper. “This lady was walking by and didn’t even know I was supposed to be here or anything but she was a race fan and she was like, Oh my god, Kyle Busch, here sign something…I’m like I can just sign your bag and she goes no no no, you can’t sign the bag. It was a Prada diaper bag or some stuff so can’t sign that,” he revealed.
The solution was simple, at least for the lady. “So she pulls out a diaper it was clean but she pulled out a diaper. So I was like okay, yeah I could sign the baby’s forehead, Ricky Bobby does those but I don’t know, besides that, there’s been some others that just skip my mind right now.”
So far, this was one of the oddest encounters in NASCAR. However, Kevin Harvick might have a story that tops this.
On the latest episode of Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour as he recalled a hilariously awkward moment with his son, Keelan. The NASCAR legend, known for his cool-headedness during his 60 Cup Series wins, found himself utterly stumped at a Walmart appearance years ago, thanks to an overzealous fan’s antics. It’s a story that’s equal parts cringe and funny, showing even a champ like Harvick can be left scrambling for answers when faced with the unexpected.
On Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour, Kaitlyn Vincie set the stage by saying, “I am sure you have seen tattoos of signature before,” prompting Harvick to dive into his most unforgettable fan encounter. “Oh yeah! Lots of tattoos… but it was probably when we were in Watkins Glen and Keelan was probably about 6, 7 years old and we made a Walmart appearance for Busch,” Harvick began, painting a picture of a routine autograph session about to go off the rails.
The staff warned him, “They’re like ‘Hey’, first lady in line she’s a very enthusiastic fan… she has a tattoo she wants to show you and just be ready,” but nothing could’ve prepared him for what came next. Harvick’s tone hinted at the chaos to come, and you could almost feel the nervous laughter bubbling up as he recounted the moment.
The fan’s enthusiasm went into overdrive, as Harvick shared, “So she walks up going crazy and the first thing she does is, ‘I gotta show you my tattoo!’ She pulls her shirt off in the middle of Walmart, Keelan is sitting right next to me… she has got a tattoo that is on her arm, and she has proceeded to take her whole shirt off. Well, this lady is probably sixty-five. No bra, and my son is sitting there like ‘What is happening dad!’”
You can just imagine the scene—Keelan’s little jaw dropping, the Walmart aisle turning into a circus, and Harvick trying not to lose it as this sixty-five-year-old fan proudly showed off her ink. It’s the kind of moment that’d make any parent sweat, and Harvick’s retelling had the podcast crew cackling at the sheer absurdity of it all.
The real kicker came when Keelan, with the blunt honesty of a kid, turned to his dad for answers: “She walks off… and Keelan looks at me like ‘Dad why did she take her shirt off in the autograph session? Couldn’t she have just show you her tattoo pulling her sleeve off’. I said I don’t know buddy. I don’t know,” Harvick recalled, his voice tinged with a mix of amusement and defeat. Kaitlyn chimed in, “I mean like I know, she was a big fan,” summing up the fan’s wild devotion—but it didn’t help Harvick explain the unexplainable to his son.
Harvick’s moment was just one that a lot of athletes go through. While NASCAR drivers may not have encountered a lot of these instances, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton once revealed signing a fan’s underwear. “I was like, this is so weird. But I signed them anyway. The guy was enthusiastic. So I just imagine him dancing in his wardrobe in them.”
Even Buffalo Bills’ QB Josh Allen has encountered something similar to Harvick, as he once revealed. “This guy said he had a tattoo of my number on his back, and I was thinking it was going to be small, and it was literally the full length of his neck down to his hips. So I signed a piece of paper and he got it tattooed right above the number.”
Regardless, Keelan’s simple logic cut through the madness, leaving Harvick at a loss, a rare moment where the veteran driver had no comeback, just a sheepish shrug for his bewildered kid. It’s a memory that still makes Harvick laugh, though you can bet he wishes he had a better answer back then.
What is Keelan Harvick up to these days?
Fast forward to 2025, and Keelan Harvick, now 12 years old, is carving out his own path in racing, far from the Walmart chaos of his childhood. According to a January 2025 feature, Keelan is stepping into full-bodied stock cars for his first full season, a big leap after a successful stint in Legends racing.
From go-karting in Europe to dominating in Legends, Keelan is now sharing a seat with his dad at Kevin Harvick Inc., in cars prepared with Rackley W.A.R. With his focus on tire-saving and late-race aggression, as he’s learned from experience, Keelan’s early stock car career is one to watch—proof he’s ready to trade awkward fan memories for checkered flags of his own. For now, he’s spending time with his family.
“Had fun at the kart track training with Piper and Keelan,” Kevin Harvick posted just a little while ago. The NASCAR driver and his two children hit the race tracks for karting, something that is crucial to stock racing. Even Kyle Busch has his son race karts to increase his skill at racing.
“Having him in a full-bodied car at this point was a little bit quicker than we probably anticipated, but I’ve never wanted him to stay in one spot, so we’ve just chased his progression. He was more than ready to move on, so we moved him on and kind of recalibrated the plan, and we’ll do that at the end of every year. He’s done a great job, and he’s definitely learning along the way. As long as we’re learning, it’s a success,” Harvick once said about his son’s future plans.
Only time will tell how things turn out for Keelan.
