When Kiyan Anthony revealed Syracuse as his choice, his mother was relieved. Since it’s just 280 miles away from New York, it allows La La Anthony to stay actively involved in her son’s life. Be it on-court or off-court achievements, the BMF star has been very vocal about her son’s journey. In a candid Q&A session, she even got emotional about her “only child” and his career ahead.
Compared to Auburn or USC, which are thousands of miles away, Syracuse’s program offers more time for parents to meet the 18-year-old. Still, La La Anthony is not ready to be away from her son. On Instagram, the VJ turned actor received a question: “Are you nervous about your son leaving for college, when it’s been just the 2 of you.” It was not just nervousness that the ex-wife of Carmelo Anthony was feeling. A whole range of emotions ran through her mind.
“Every emotion you can think of…excited for him. Sad. Proud. Nervous. Sad again. Excited again. Back to sad again cuz he’s leaving it’s hard. That’s my only child.” There was another question, which the Chi star had no hesitation in answering. “What’s your biggest accomplishment in life?” La La Anthony replied, “My son..Kiyan Anthony.” Just recently, the Syracuse commit celebrated his 18th birthday, and his mother made sure it was the biggest event of social media.
She kicked things off with a sweet message on her IG story: “@kiyananthony is officially 18 yrs old. Happy Birthday to my everything!!!!” La La Anthony would add multiple stories, one also included a photo of the 18-year-old with Barack Obama. She captioned the picture with the former President, “Epic pic!!!!!! Happy 18th birthday Kiyan.” The Power Star also dubbed her son as her “favorite karaoke partner.” Despite these praises, there are certain tendencies that the 6-foot-5 guards’ parents are worried about.
Despite being separated, La La Anthony and Carmelo call out their son’s one practice in unison
The former couple went their separate ways in 2021 but decided to raise their son together. Even during the Syracuse announcement, Kiyan Anthony chose her father’s podcast, La La Anthony was present. She even joked about how the internet would perceive if the former couple did not hug. “Are they (fans) going to talk sh– because I didn’t give you a hug?”

Melo, unfazed, reassured her, “It’s all good. We far away,” and they started laughing. However, soon after, both Melo and La La hugged each other. During the podcast, Kiyan’s father hinted at things where he needs to be independent. “It’s an amazing thing but the fact that you are leaving home, you are going to be on your own. We spoke about this yesterday. You got to learn how to cook; you got to like, learn how to clean your s–t; your apartment like all type; driving.”
La La Anthony wasn’t sugar coating her son’s weakness. She added, “No, you need to clean. No, you’re messy.” So, the 18-year-old will have to be on his toes off the court so his parents don’t air his “messy” behavior on the net.
