Last month, Lamont Roach Jr. came tantalizing close to the WBA lightweight glory. However, despite taking Gervonta Davis to the limit, he was only able to walk away with a majority decision draw—a bittersweet outcome, leaving him inches away from a second-weight class title.
However, before the judges’ verdict arrived, the majority of boxing fans felt The Reaper had done enough. After all, Tank had taken a knee and despite not facing any consequences, Roach dominated the fight. The blockbuster bout could have gone either way and other than one person, no one was sure of the result. The one person who, according to Roach, knew: Gervonta Davis who called out the result to Roach mid-fight with unshakable certainty.
Was Gervonta Davis sure of the result?
Recently, Lamont Roach appeared on the All The Smoke podcast. As expected, the bout against Gervonta Davis took up a chunk of their conversation. During the interview, the Washington native opened up about the moment the fight’s result was revealed, admitting he’d been convinced the win was his—until it wasn’t. As soon as Judge Steve Weisfeld’s 114-114 scorecard rang out, Roach’s heart sank. It immediately took him back to the conversation he had with the WBA lightweight champion during the fight. “After they say 114 114 immediately it took me back to probably like the 11th round or 12th round. He was skating around the ring,” Roach admitted.
That’s when Roach revealed their conversation inside the ring. “He was like, ‘What you ain’t going to win?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah why not?’ He like, ‘They ain’t gonna give it to you.’ I was like, ‘All right,’” he recalled, revealing the whole back-and-forth.
While Lamont Roach seems to believe there’s weight to those words, Gervonta Davis was surely trash-talking and nothing else. However, it is bound to create some controversy. Furthermore, that wasn’t the only hot topic. Roach didn’t shy away from revisiting the infamous bite incident, fanning the flames of controversy even further.
Lamont Roach had no idea
The Washington native doubled down on his wild claim, claiming that Tank tried to bite him. While Lamont Roach did not accept it at first, his stance changed when he went back to analyze the fight. He first revealed it a few weeks ago, pinpointing the moment because of Davis’ glove positioning.
As Andre Ward teased the topic again, he said, “We was in the locker room. My father told me, ‘Man, he tried to bite you.’” At first, he couldn’t believe it as he felt nothing, but as mentioned, the script flipped as he dug through the footage. “When I went back and watched the fight, I was like because I wasn’t even thinking about it no more. It was probably like a day later. I was like that’s what he talking about,” he recounted. Furthermore, things became more evident when he heard even the commentators comparing Tank with Mike Tyson.
Only Gervonta Davis knows whether these allegations hold any truth to them. However, one thing is clear, all these controversies have made the rematch far more interesting and worth it.
