The Phoenix Suns are making headlines for all the wrong reasons, and Kevin Durant is once again at the center of the drama. With trade rumors swirling and the team underachieving, tensions reached a boiling point between Durant and Sacramento Kings forward Jae Crowder. A leaked audio recording of their heated exchange has now gone viral, exposing the explicit trash talk between the two NBA veterans.
The leaked audio captured a fiery back-and-forth between Durant and Crowder, with neither player backing down. The exchange unfolded like this:
Durant: “You’re not about that life.”
Crowder: “Soft a* n****.”*
Durant: “You can fight me over there, do something!”
Despite the intensity of their altercation, Durant later downplayed the incident when asked about it, saying, “Who? I ain’t even heard a word from dog.”
This isn’t the first time Durant and Crowder have clashed. Their history goes back to 2016 when Crowder, then with the Boston Celtics, was furious over Durant’s decision to sign with the Golden State Warriors. The Celtics were among the teams aggressively pursuing Durant in free agency, and Crowder felt betrayed after revealing their defensive strategies to the superstar during the recruiting process.
“We told him basically the scouting report of how we guarded Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson]… and he went and joined them. It was like a slap in the face for us,” Crowder said at the time.
Fast forward to 2024, and the bad blood between the two remains just as fresh. Crowder, now with the Kings, has never been one to back down from a confrontation, and Durant, known for his unfiltered responses, wasn’t going to let him have the last word.
Durant’s Future in Phoenix Is Uncertain
While Durant is still putting up elite numbers—averaging 26.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game—the Suns are far from the championship contender they were expected to be. With Phoenix sitting outside the playoff picture, speculation around Durant’s future has only intensified.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia didn’t do much to silence the noise when discussing the team’s plans for the future. Speaking to ESPN, Ishbia made it clear that everything will be evaluated in the offseason:
“I’ll just say that we’re going to evaluate in the offseason. We’re going to find a way to win, and it’s probably a lot easier winning with Kevin Durant than without him. But at the same time, yes, if we’re not good enough in this iteration of the Phoenix Suns, we’re going to find a way to be better next year.”
That statement doesn’t exactly scream confidence in Durant’s long-term future with the franchise.
Adding fuel to the fire, reports from ESPN’s Tim MacMahon suggest that the Suns quietly explored trade options for Durant before last month’s deadline. The front office reportedly reached out to multiple teams, including the Timberwolves, Heat, Rockets, and Knicks, to gauge interest in a potential deal. While no trade materialized, the fact that Phoenix was even considering the possibility speaks volumes.
Durant, who turns 37 in September, still has one more year left on his contract worth $54.7 million. Any trade involving him would be complicated—not just because of his hefty salary but also due to his age and injury history. Despite his undeniable talent, teams may hesitate to give up major assets for a player nearing the twilight of his career.
The Suns also have limited flexibility when it comes to roster moves. Bradley Beal’s no-trade clause further restricts their ability to shake things up, meaning that if the team does want to make a drastic change, moving Durant might be their best option.
If this season has shown anything, it’s that Phoenix’s current formula isn’t working. The Durant-Booker-Beal experiment has yet to translate into consistent success, and with the Western Conference as competitive as ever, the Suns are running out of time to figure things out.
For now, Durant remains in Phoenix, but with tensions running high and his future uncertain, this offseason could bring some major changes. Whether he stays or gets shipped off to another contender, one thing is clear—wherever Durant goes, the drama follows.
And as for his rivalry with Jae Crowder? That battle isn’t ending anytime soon.
