Likely Date for Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. Already Out

On March 1 this year, Gervonta Davis joined Lamont Roach Jr. for a dance. Rather than the success he hoped for, it became a bitter experience. One filled with embarrassment and ignominy – something he wouldn’t have dreamt of.

If Davis’s actions – the ninth-round knee, justification, and referee Steve Willis’ indiscretion – raised several eyebrows, the majority-draw decision sparked much outrage. The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) gave its seal of approval to the decision. So rematch remains the safest bet to settle the score. In an interview, Roach Jr. expressed hope that the second fight would come soon. It looks like his dreams are on the verge of becoming reality.

He wondered about the venue as well: “Now: is it a #LasVegas fight?” Woods acknowledged that, due to its financial appeal, Las Vegas has always remained a strong option for big fights. However, since the first fight was in New York and sold out, and both Davis and Roach Jr. are from the Eastern U.S., he felt the fight should take place on the East Coast.

The latest episode of ‘Nightcap‘ saw Lamont Roach Jr. join Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson for an in-depth discussion. Discussing the rematch scenario, Johnson asked, “Hey listen, Tank has publicly expressed interest, obviously, in a rematch. I’m you want a rematch as well, are you open to an immediate rematch, or do you have a a you don’t need a tune-up, but do you have a tune-up fight just to keep yourself going, or do y’all y’all run it right back?

Roach Jr.: A moment I’m eagerly awaiting

Roach Jr. promptly responded, “Immediate…immediate.”  The super featherweight champion further explained that the contract for the first fight already included a rematch clause. If certain conditions met—such such as Davis losing or the fight ending in a draw – there would be an automatic rematch. Given that the rematch is contractually mandatory, Roach Jr. confirmed that if Davis chose to activate the clause, he could not refuse it.

Essentially, Davis has the right to request the rematch. Roach must fight him again under the terms already agreed upon. Talking about the timeline, Johnson speculated whether the rematch could occur within the next six months or even a year. Roach Jr. made it clear that it’s up to the ‘A-side,’ meaning Gervonta Davis and team. Otherwise, he personally expected it to happen soon. When asked what ‘soon’ meant to him, he initially suggested a month but then settled on July as his expectation for the rematch.

So now it shows signs of turning up a month earlier. Nevertheless, fans should wait until an official confirmation emerges.

Do you think Lamont Roach Jr. will finally get his revenge when he faces Gervonta Davis again?
