The 2025 PGA Championship will feature 16 LIV Golf pros. Some of the biggest names like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm, and others are all expected to compete for the major title. Joaquin Niemann has also earned a qualification due to his excellent form recently. But there is one name that has not made the list despite showing consistency in the 2025 season. Rippers GC player and fifth-ranked player on the LIV Golf leaderboard, Lucas Herbert, will not be taking a trip to Charlotte this week.
The 29-year-old has had an outstanding year with three top-4 performances. He was also consistently finishing in the top quarter of the table during his time on the PGA Tour. And yet, Herbert has failed to get a ticket to Quail Hollow. The Australian expressed his disappointment in an interview recently as he spoke about the limited opportunities he receives being a LIV Golf player.
Flushing It wrote “Lucas Herbert has been playing some of the best golf of his career this season, sitting 5th on the LIV Standings, but he didn’t earn an invite to the PGA Championship.” The golf experts confirmed that Herbert is not a part of the field at Quail Hollow. Speaking to Flushing It, the Rippers GC pro said, “That was the thing that we knew when we signed up with LIV, that majors would be the issue. They have the right to invite, or not invite, whoever they want. Obviously, I’ve been playing great this year, and I would have loved to have played. But a big part of why I’ve played so well this year has been being in a team environment with Ripper.” It seems that he understands that he hasn’t earned his way to the 2025 PGA Championship. To receive an exemption from playing in the major is out of his hands.
Despite that, he doesn’t seem to regret jumping ship in 2024. Speaking about playing in the LIV Golf league, Herbert said, “Having an off-season to be able to do a lot of work in the gym and also a lot of equipment testing has helped too. We were never really afforded that luxury playing on the PGA Tour. You just couldn’t have gotten away with playing that little golf, unless you’re Adam Scott, or these guys like Rory, who is able to guarantee he’s able to go and win an event every year.” He believes that you need to be at a certain level in your game to have the luxury to take a break from the PGA Tour, and only top players like Rory McIlroy or fellow Australian pro, Adam Scott, can afford that.
