LIV Golf’s Sergio Garcia Full of Pride & Emotion as 21-Year-Old Amateur Matches His Augusta National Feat: ‘So Proud’

Four. This is the number of Spanish pro golfers who have won the Masters. Five is the number of Spanish golfers who have conquered Augusta. Courtesy of Carla Bernat Escuder. She became the first Spanish woman to win the Augusta Women’s National Amateur. She carded a closing four-under 68 to edge out 16-year-old prodigy Asterisk Talley by one stroke. For her supreme confidence and improved strokes, she has to thank one person. One fellow Spaniard. Sergio Garcia’s father, Victor Garcia.

Speaking to the press after her incredible win at Augusta, Carla Bernat Escuder expressed utmost gratitude for Victor Garcia. She expressed how much the father of the former Masters Champion had helped with her game. “I’m so thankful for him. He just helped me so much with my golf swing and even outside of the golf course, he’s always there for me. I wish he could be here, but he’s going to be here next week,”  she stated. Escuder started under Victor in her junior years, aged 13. And now, her day is even brighter. All thanks to proud Sergio Garcia.

Garcia was the last Spaniard to take over Augusta, 8 years ago. He is in Miami, but despite the busy schedule, he made time to craft a well-meaning, motivating message for the 2025 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champion.  In an Instagram post, captioned, “We are very proud of you, enjoy this great moment and GO SPAIN!” Sergio Garcia addressed the Kansas State University golfer’s victory and explained how proud he was to see her achieve success.

Speaking in Spanish to his countrywoman, he stated, “What’s up, Carla? Hey. Winning the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, that’s something to be proud of. Incredible! We’re so proud of you. It’s been a pleasure having you at our academy. Getting to know you and playing with you. I’m truly so proud of how well you’ve done. You’re becoming an amazing player and woman. Good luck and enjoy the moment.”

Garcia is a true Spanish man. He respects his country and wants to build a legacy that people from his country would be proud of. When he won in Valderrama last year, he was so happy to see Spanish athletes taking over. “I might be wrong, but I think that if the soccer team wins tonight, it could be probably one of the biggest days in the history of Spanish sports, I would say. [Carlos] Alcaraz winning [Wimbledon], us winning both individually and as a team, and then the national team winning the Euro Cup. It would be amazing to have all those four things happen in the same day. It would be amazing,” he said.

A truly special message for a truly special performance from one of the up-and-coming youngsters in the game. Carla Bernat will cherish this wish from a man who once dominated the very stage she claimed her victory at. Garcia, on the other hand, while taking pride in a fellow Spaniard’s victory, will see this as a positive sign with the Masters coming in hot. The Masters will also feature another student of Victor Garcia, US Amateur Champion Josele Ballester, whom Sergio Garcia will be looking forward to competing with.

Sergio Garcia’s preparation for the Masters

The 2025 Masters Tournament will feature nearly 12 LIV Golf players, of which seven are former champions. Sergio Garcia is one of them, having won in 2017. This year at LIV, Garcia has shown good overall consistency and is currently third in the individual points list behind Masters participants Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm. Garcia’s brilliant victory at LIV Golf Hong Kong is also a testament to his true ability.

After two rounds in Miami, he is second on the leaderboard at LIV Golf Miami, only behind the 2x US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau. He will be looking to use this rich vein of form in a week in tougher and more competitive conditions that Augusta has to offer and push for a repeat of his feat from eight years ago when he defeated Justin Rose in a playoff.

Do you think Sergio Garcia can win his second Masters title at the Augusta National Golf Course this year? Could a Spaniard winning at the course mere days before the Masters be a sign of good things to come for Garcia? It remains to be seen.
