Usually, the welcomes to the big leagues are full of excitement with the anticipated thrill of high-level competition. But for Marcelo Mayer, a 22-year-old rookie for the Boston Red Sox, it’s not what he thought of. The youngster, who might have dreamed of regular at-bats and bonding with teammates upon his promotion to the majors, is now somehow limited due to a strategy crafted by none other than the Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
Mayer’s MLB debut was anticipated for weeks. And why not? He was hailed as one of the best shortstop talents in the game. And when he finally got a call-up, Red Sox Nation cheered. But since then, fans have seen a lot of confusing managerial decisions, which has raised concerns about the team’s future.
Boston is already struggling, and when the fans thought Mayer’s inclusion in the dugout might help them get back on track, Cora came up with a different plan. In the game against the Red Sox’s biggest rivals, the Yankees, Mayer hit his first homer—a dream come true for any rookie. However, what happened next raised eyebrows.
In the next inning, Cora called up Romy Gonzalez in place of Mayer to go up against a left-handed pitcher. Shocking! And the decision didn’t prove correct as Boston fell short, losing to the Yankees 6-9.
Mayer himself, however, took it positively. When asked about it, he said, “I know I’m the young guy and we have a lot of great players here who match lefties…I know I’m capable of hitting lefties, but I mean, I respect AC’s decision in putting these guys in to play.”
Of course, he respects the manager! But was it for only one game? Um, the news from the corner says otherwise. And the Red Sox nation is in no mood to accept Cora’s decision.

For how long is he going to keep Mayer away from the lefties? Cora provided a peek at that, too. There’s no certainty Mayer will be in the line-up against the Yankees on Sunday night, as the manager might not want him to face Carlos Rodon, another lefty.
“I don’t know. I don’t know if we’re going to do that tomorrow,” Cora said when asked if Mayer will feature in the next game against the Yanks.
Well, Mayer might not mind Cora’s decision, but the fans? They’re furious and have been sharing their unfiltered opinion.
Red Sox Nation no longer believes in Cora’s process
It’s out in the open that the Red Sox are struggling, sitting fourth in AL East with 31-35. And who is in the thick of it? Alex Cora and his questionable decisions, be it benching Mayer or not having an open communication with Devers for 1B. And the losses are just adding fuel to the slow-burning fire. What are fans demanding? Cora’s resignation.
“Is he trying to get fired?” a comment read on X. Fans reckon benching Mayer after his first career home run isn’t just a bad idea, it will be a career-risky move for the manager. “Is there a chance Alex Cora won’t manage tomorrow, too?” another fan echoed the same.

The Red Sox have been inconsistent, and fans are fed up of how poorly they seem to be managing their top talents. The next possible solution is to replace the manager. It looks like it’s echoing all over Fenway Park.
Not only externally, but internally too, what Cora is looking to do might not be favored.” I guarantee you Breslow is pissed at Cora,” wrote one fan. Well, it goes without saying that Marcelo Mayer is a big part of the plans of the Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, who is in charge of building the team’s future.
“What a great way to develop the 22‑year‑old,” another fan chimed in. Now, that’s a scathing dig at the clubhouse development plans with a blend of sarcasm. Young players need to have at-bats, especially against tough pitchers, to learn and get better at the major league level. The Red Sox may be hindering Mayer’s progress by limiting his exposure.
“Makes no sense at all. Cora being an idiot here,” a blunt take appeared. The fans are not holding back at all and it’s totally understandable. Mayer has not performed poorly to be benched. It’s been only two weeks in the majors for the youngster and he has recorded a .206 average and a .623 OPS. These might not be amazing numbers, but they aren’t poor by any stretch. Getting benched just after hitting a homer? Hard to digest!
Marcelo Mayer and Alex Cora’s situation is a reflection of the Boston Red Sox’s current state. Cora says he balances development with winning, and Mayer is respectful, but the fanbase isn’t buying it. The coming games will tell the real story.
