Mario Cristobal is all set to debut his QB1, Carson Beck, this season. The much-hyped player is back at practice and is starting to look like the star he was at Georgia. But Cristobal also played a gamble when he poached Beck from Kirby Smart. That brutal arm injury ended his season in the most important game of the year, and he was in recovery when Cristobal got him. Springball began and ended, and Beck’s absence started to scare fans. There was once a time in the offseason when it was looking like those $4 million were all in vain. And not to mention, his beyond-troubling 2024 stats were also coming with him to Miami.
Carson Beck had a terrible season last year, period. His completion percentage went down, and his interceptions glaringly rose up. The latter was the highest thrown by an SEC player (12) ever since Matt Corral in 2020. “He’s not the same guy,” Todd McShay told The Ringer. Beck was missing some key players in the offense, too, like Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett, who replaced the receivers, couldn’t match up to their production. Beck was also dosed with a good number of fumbles and turnovers—2024 was not a year that seems like one made for Carson Beck.
And yet, Mario Cristobal chose to target the QB. Now that he is in Miami, the HC does not want to look back at the past. “I think it’s great that what he’s gone through, because I think in the end, we get the best version of Carson,” Cristobal told 1010XL – Jacksonville Sports Radio. “Carson, at the end of the day, had a million choices. And he chose to be at Miami,” the HC added further. In fact, Cristobal is so confident in him that he finds Beck similar to Cam Ward.
“Cam wasn’t concerned about getting the Heisman Trophy, or the Davy O’Brien or the All-American. He wanted to win. And he wanted to be someone who could show that he could help an organization elevate its profile. And that’s what I think we have in Carson,” Cristobal said in his comparison of the two QBs. With Cam Ward, there was a unanimous agreement and confidence that he would win those honors. Beck, however, has experts in a dilemma because of his 2024 season.
He saved his career from further downfall by choosing to forgo the draft, because there was no way he was going to go as a top pick after his 2024 season. At Miami, despite the negative press around him, Beck only has one goal in his mind: improvement. But the community remains unimpressed.
Carson Beck’s ‘Cam Ward’ plan under fire from fans
The $4 million tag and the Hanna Cavinder angle were enough to throw Carson Beck from the pedestal he was put on. Fans alleged that his personal issues were distracting him from his game and were affecting his performance badly. But, NFL insiders say Beck is locked in on proving critics wrong and correcting all his mistakes. NFL Rookie Watch also echoed Cristobal’s feelings on Cam Ward. Insiders say Beck plans on improving his stocks by following the agenda of the former Miami QB.
“Carson Beck is reportedly ‘attempting’ to follow the Cam Ward fast track to becoming the first overall pick. Beck has reportedly made it an ‘internal goal’ to make the most of his time in Miami and increase his draft stock into the Top-5 picks. Several NFL scouts reportedly believe Beck ‘has the same tools’ Ward put on display in Miami to propel himself to the first overall pick,” the post read. Beck, at one time, had very troubling predictions about his draft prospects. And now, the new QB is dedicating himself to the job to be a surefire first-round pick. That’s the ceiling he set for himself.
But fans are yet to be convinced. “-500% chance lmao focus on the top 5 rounds,” wrote one fan. Let’s face it, this year’s draft has proved that hype and buzz don’t necessarily guarantee a place in the first round. “This is the first QB who will scream he has all the measurables… but I know his mental game is LOWWWW,” wrote another user. Beck’s mental presence and personal troubles were a factor; he wasn’t having a great year, and it took a toll on him. Another fan vehemently disagreed that Cam Ward and Carson Beck are similar. “Unless I developed early onset Alzheimer’s, there’s no way Beck has the same tools as Ward,” the comment read.
Carson Beck did not have much confidence from experts during the off-season. But now, as he works towards pushing 2024 firmly to the past, there’s a slight possibility of the QB doing exactly what he has the potential for this season.
