With the NFL draft upon us, today might be the perfect moment to look back at Matthew Stafford’s journey in the NFL. As millions in America eagerly wait for the No.1 overall pick in Green Bay, Stafford has already been there and done that. A 16-year veteran and a Super Bowl champion, Stafford was once the No.1 overall pick for the Detroit Lions. Now in the latter stages of his career, Stafford, who was once a highly touted college prospect out of the Georgia Bulldogs, will surely be recalling those 2009 memories. But before he relived those frantic hours in the green room, it seems his 4 daughters were more enthusiastic about the upcoming draft.
Stafford, who shares four daughters, Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter and Tyler, with Kelly, was trying to give their absolute best, remembering their father’s draft pick. When Kelly, on her “The Morning After” podcast, asked, “What draft pick was Daddy?” to their daughters, they frantically answered “Quarterback.” Obviously, Kelly wasn’t too pleased with the wrong answer. As she tried to correct them, saying it’s his position, not the pick.
Well, Kelly then tried to make it easier for the girls by asking them to guess a number. Still, they couldn’t even get nearer to No.1 pick—their daddy was drafted back then. Staffords daughters guessed 7, 20, 26, 18, but none said No.1. Kelly eventually had to tell them their daddy was picked No.1 in the 2009 draft. Astonishingly, they thought No.1 pick meant their daddy lost the most games. Listening to their wayward conclusion about the No.1 pick status—that means a lot to a rookie player. Kelly burst out laughing.
She tried to tell all of them that the No.1 pick doesn’t mean the player has lost the most games. It’s the other way around. The team which drafts first means they have lost the most games in the previous season. And in the 2008 season, the Lions became the first team in NFL history to finish 0-16. From there, Stafford came in and was their primary starter from 2009 to 202o. During those 12 seasons, Stafford didn’t just make the Lions relevant again. Under his leadership, they made it to three postseason appearances.
But due to the lack of playoff success, Stafford was traded to the Rams in a direct switch with Jared Goff. Rams saw the best of the former No.1 overall. After he led them to Super Bowl LVI success in his first season, Stafford instantly earned a legendary status in LA. Now, 37, Stafford may have returned for another year as a Rams QB. But it won’t be long before the Rams identify his ideal replacement as they look towards the draft board.
Is there any chance of the Rams finding Matthew Stafford’s successor in the 2025 NFL draft?
Stafford is heading into his 17th season in the NFL, fresh off an adjusted contract. He might be the Rams’ QB for the 2025 season, but not for too long. Given his year-on-year status in LA, Stafford and Rams could go their separate ways sooner rather than later. Considering he led the Rams to a surprising NFC divisional round berth, where they almost defeated the eventual champions, the Eagles. Stafford showed he still has enough fuel left in his tank to continue leading this franchise. But for how long, that’s the question.
The Rams have tried Blake Bortles, Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz, and Jimmy Garoppolo as their backup to Stafford. But none showed enough composure to replace the veteran QB. Now that the draft is closing in, maybe the Rams could bring in an heir apparent who can eventually replace Stafford. Some mock drafts have predicted that the Rams will take Shedeur Sanders if he experiences a massive draft-day slide. Then there’s Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe or even Kyle McCord.
Rams could bring in a QB and give him some time to settle before Stafford vacates his seat. Even he doesn’t have any problem with the Rams drafting a young signal-caller, “If a quarterback comes along and they feel the need to take them. I’ll welcome them with open arms and try to teach them as much as I possibly can.” So, only time will tell whether the Rams are really interested in drafting an eventual successor to Stafford. Well, we are going to find out the answer soon as the 2025 NFL draft kicks off today.
