They’re looking for an impact player to bolster the bullpen, lessen their reliance on Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas, and give manager Carlos Mendoza faith that their rotation can hold up far into October.
Mets starters have only pitched an average of 4.35 innings since June 25, which is the fewest in the league. They really need someone who can bring balance and length back to the rotation.
And shortly after, yet another update dropped that somehow connects the dots. MLB Scoops posted on their X account: “Headway has been made between #Mets and #Marlins surrounding a Sandy Alcantara trade. Nothing close, but worth noting as David Stearns looks to beef up rotation.”
That brought attention to Sandy Alcantara. He was the Cy Young Award, but now he’s having a hard time coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2025 with a 6.66 ERA. He might have struggled on the mound. But let’s not forget he can eat up innings, stop power hitters, and give the bullpen some much-needed breathing room.
Alcantara has a $17 million deal for 2025 and 2026, and a team option for $21 million in 2027 (with a $2 million buyout). He throws a fastball that averages over 97 mph and has excellent movement on his sinker.
David Stearns’ public tone this week adds to all of this. He knows how the market works. “Getting a starting pitcher at this time of year is pretty hard,” he said. But he also made it clear, “if those guys are available, we’ll be involved.” Tbh, their latest trade of Orioles pitcher perfectly aligns with Stearns’s thought.
Bullpen bolt with Soto—And the Sandy deal would be the cherry
The Mets‘ executive office made a big move by sending minor leaguers Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster to the Orioles for left-handed reliever Gregory Soto. This trade will have an immediate impact on the bullpen. Soto addresses a big need for the postseason. A left-handed pitcher who can get big outs and stop lineup matchups late in the game.

Stearns didn’t hold back after the game—getting more help for the bullpen was his top objective. And Soto was exactly what he wanted. David decided to sign an experienced player instead of minor league pitchers.
Well, Stearns is quite happy with this trade. As he said, “With the injuries we’ve had from that side of the ‘pen over the course of the season, the importance that an arm from the left side can potentially have down the stretch — and hopefully into October — it was certainly something we wanted to accomplish.”
This front office isn’t just addressing immediate issues. They are building a team that can succeed in October. Adding Soto was a sensible and necessary move that aligns with a larger vision. And if Sandy were to come to Queens, it would be the perfect finishing touch to a team built with confidence.
