The New York Mets have lost 9 of their last 10 games. This rough stretch (46-33) happens to be their worst of this season. And this has a lot to do with their starting pitchers, often leaving the team struggling to get a lead. Another equally pressing concern is their offense. But despite everything, the Mets are seeing these struggles as an opportunity to strategize as the trade deadline looms.
Their top of the batting order—Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeil—has been hitting just fine. On the contrary, the bottom half has been struggling. It starts with their sixth spot and goes till their ninth. These players—Ronny Mauricio, Jared Young, Tyrone Taylor, Luis Torrens, and Brett Baty—have failed to produce at the plate.
The offensive lapse has prompted the Mets’ front office to act accordingly when the trade deadline hits. Acknowledging the impact of the lineup struggles, Mets’ president David Stearns said, “We’re learning about our team.”

He added, “We saw a lot of really good things through the first two-plus months of the season, and now we’re seeing the flipside of that. I still think we have a really good team. I think we’re certainly much better than we’ve played over these last 10 days, 12 days.” Stearns took this rough stretch as an opportunity to show optimism in his team. He even emphasized that this stretch forced him to evaluate the team.
“Take it in as information, add that to what we already know, and help us plot forward. Does it expose any singular spot? I don’t think so right now. But it does add to our information about our team, which at this time of year can be valuable,” he told reporters on Tuesday at Citi Field.
According to Stearns, there is no particular spot that comes out as an obvious weak point. The front office is taking a measured approach by gathering data about their team. This will ultimately help them make decisions as the trade deadline approaches.
Key areas the Mets will have under watch at this deadline
With only a few weeks until the deadline, some key positions are drawing attention for the New York Mets. Specifically, it’s third base, center field, and designated hitter.
Mark Vientos, who is expected to return sometime soon, will have a chance to prove that he can contribute well offensively at DH or third, since his defense at third is not good enough. The Mets even tried having Ronny Mauricio or Brett Baty at the plate; however, that didn’t work either. Mauricio missed the entire last season due to his knee surgery. And when he’s back, he will reportedly be sent to Triple-A after Vientos returns.
“I think we’re asking a lot of Ronny right now,” Sterns admitted. Apparently, Mauricio lacks plate discipline. So, regular playing time might help him.
That said, third base is clearly the weak spot for the Mets this season. With an OPS of .653 at that spot, it ranks 20th in the league. So, naturally, that position needs an upgrade at this deadline if the current players fail to make an impact. “What I expect will happen is that someone is going to step up,” Stearns said.
Center field happens to be another concerning spot for the Mets. Tyrone Taylor offers above-average defense, and Jeff McNeil is good, too. However, the output from the offensive side in the center field has been underwhelming—a .649 OPS, which again ranks 20th in the league.
The only role the Mets have been content with is the catchers.
As per sources, more than anything, the Mets want to treat their weak points as an opportunity to analyze things. And this trade deadline, they will be eyeing a DH, center field, and third base.
