Pete Alonso is in the New York Mets. Sure, but till when?
After months of speculation, Alonso is wearing the jersey that brought much of his name and fame. But the details of the deal were dodgy. It simply felt that this marriage might not hold on long. The slugger had agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract, with a player opt-out after this season. He literally has one foot out of Queens.
At the end of the day, he is a Scott Boras client. And everyone knows how that story goes; look at Blake Snell. So, granted this, the rumors about how this is just a temporary move for Alonso have been going around. And adding fuel to this fire is none other than his teammate Brandon Nimmo.
Talking to Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, Brandon Nimmo said, “I definitely wanted to see Pete back hitting behind Soto, and I think he’s going to have a great year doing that. It’s going to reward him, and he’ll probably get to test the market again next year.” The last part is hard to ignore. This is crushing for fans to hear, as they absolutely adore him. The fan fest where fans shouted, “We want Pete” to Steve Cohen is proof.
However, Pete Alonso might not feel the same. He himself called the contract “kind of like a bridge thing just to get to the next contract.” So this might just be a prove-it year for him, much like Cody Bellinger had last year before joining the pinstripes this season. For the rival teams, though, the fact that the New York Mets may be a pit stop is great news. A player of Alonso’s caliber is a perfect addition to a dream lineup.
For now the New York Mets have their star. But next year? That’s looking shaky. However, if the rumors are true, there are possibilities of them finding a replacement with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And if that happens, this will go on smoothly for New York Mets. Vlad is young, a powerful bat, and fits just right.
Brandon Nimmo can’t stop gushing over New York Mets gem
Brandon Nimmo sure didn’t keep his cool in the interview. He not only spilled some Alonso deets for everyone, but he also didn’t hide his excitement over their newest star—Juan Soto. Nimmo took the time to mention why Soto is such a force on the mound. “I mean, in layman’s terms, let’s go with first and foremost—he is a freak of nature physically, right? So he’s 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, and it’s all muscle.” Nimmo mentioned that Soto’s hitting style, his vision, and his skills are spot on.

Nimmo also dove deep into Soto’s swing, explaining how he gets on the plane with the pitch from the start. “When you do that, you give yourself a ton of room for error. If he’s staying on it all the way through, he can hit the ball at almost any point in the zone.” This is why Nimmo calls Soto the ultimate hitting machine.
Now, although they are new teammates, Brandon Nimmo did get a chance to peek into Soto’s work ethic back in the 2022 lockout when they both had trained in a facility in Miami. “I was fortunate enough to be around him then. I saw how hard he worked, how he handled his routine—it was incredibly professional. And now, it’s more of the same.” Clearly, he is super impressed by his new teammate.
