Miami Open 2025: Joao Fonseca vs Learner Tien; Preview, Head-to-Head, and Prediction

The 18-year-old Brazilian star, Joao Fonseca recently added another milestone to his rapidly rising career. Winning the title at the Arizona Tennis Classic, Fonseca has now become the second-youngest player from South America after Juan Martín del Potro to win three ATP Challenger Tour titles. And with rapid rise come massive expectations! How Fonseca manages that will determine how his career progresses.

But pressure, so far, has been a privilege for the teenager. “Pressure will always be there, and so will expectations. That’s why you have to stay focused and surround yourself with people who can help you, and that’s what I’m doing now,” says Fonseca. After his title triumph in Arizona, he’s now all set to take on a familiar rival, Learner Tien (USA) in the first round (R128) of the Miami Open. Who has the edge in this match?

Joao Fonseca vs Learner Tien: Preview

Joao Fonseca won the Next Gen ATP Finals last year. And, he carried the momentum to the new season, winning the Challenger Canberra, AU, before going on to secure a massive victory against Andrey Rublev (9) in the first round of the 2025 AO. Fonseca later also won the Argentina Open title, beating Francisco Cerundolo in the final. He is currently on a five-match winning streak and will be entering this match following his impressive 7-6(5),7-6(0) victory over Alexander Bublik in the final of the Challenger Phoenix, US. So, he has already won quite a few titles this season. Can Fonseca keep his winning momentum intact in his debut campaign in Miami?

Learner Tien, on the flip side, has also secured some impressive wins this season. He defeated the world number 8, Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the 2025 AO in a five-set thriller. After that, he also made it to the QF at the Mexican Open. Tien has won three of his last five matches and will be entering this match, following his straight-sets loss to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the R128 of the Indian Wells Open.

Last year, in his debut appearance in Miami, Tien was defeated in the opening round of the qualifiers. How far can he go this time?

Fonseca vs Tien: Head-to-Head

Here comes the interesting part. Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien have met each other twice now and guess what? Both their previous meetings were in the same tournament last year. Currently, Fonseca leads the H2H scoreline by 2-0,

2024 Next Gen ATP Finals Final: Fonseca 2-4,4-3(8),4-0,4-2.
2024 Next Gen ATP Finals Round Robin: Fonseca 4-0,4-0,1-4,4-2.

Prediction: Fonseca to win this match in three sets

Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien are two of the brightest prospects on the ATP Tour currently! However, considering the form Fonseca has been in the 2025 season, it’s very hard to not back him against any other young player right now. The Brazilian is currently ranked 60th in the world and he has a win-loss record of 7-5 this season.

Learner Tien (66), on the other side, has a win-loss record of 6-5. While Tien may put up a strong fight in this match, Fonseca has a higher chance of coming out with flying colors.

Talking about their playing styles, Tien is known for his all-court, tactical, and composed style of play, characterized by smart shot selection, variety, and a focus on building points rather than relying on power and speed, He is a left-handed player who uses his speed and nimble footwork to claim territory and counterpunch effectively.

Although Tien loves playing on the hard courts, Fonseca has all the weapons to counter him in this epic battle of two teenagers.

The Argentina Open winner is known for his explosive forehand, lethal serve, and attacking baseline style which he uses to maintain a fast-paced, high-energy game, adaptable across different surfaces. Fonseca has a good forehand, which can be very penetrating at times and he can also hit it with heavy spin. This is, in fact, one of these lethal weapons.

Fonseca also hit his backhands with quite a bit of power and precision. Keeping the strengths and the recent form of the two players in mind, we feel Fonseca might edge past Tien in three sets.
