Dustin Poirier may think Michael Chandler is a “b–ch”, but he still thinks ‘Iron’ is among the most entertaining fighters to watch. Poirier and Chandler fought each other at UFC 281 three years ago, after which ‘Diamond’ accused the former Bellator champ of ‘cheating. ‘ They do share a begrudging respect for each other.
And Michael Chandler is taking the prospects of Poirier’s retirement hard and seemingly wants to bury the hatchet altogether. ‘Diamond’ has said that he will retire after one more fight. “It’s looking like summer in New Orleans is close to happening for my retirement fight. A pay-per-view in New Orleans this summer would be incredible… Lay the gloves down where it all started in Louisiana. It would be an honor for me,” Poirer told ‘The Schmo’ last month.
And Chandler, despite his differences with Poirier, got a bit emotional talking about the former interim champ’s warrior spirit and indelible impact on the sport.
“Man, he’s an absolute legend, man. He’s a guy who really grew up inside of the UFC, a guy who, you know, has earned his stripes. You know his hashtag ‘paid in full’, he really has paid in full for everything that he’s accomplished. Everything that he’s done– the wins that he has had, the losses that he has taken and the way he came back from those losses, fighting for the title numerous times. I think that’s his legacy,” ‘Iron’ told ‘ShakMMA’ in a recent interview.

In fact, the former Bellator champ is such a big fan of Poirier and his bar brawler fighting style that he didn’t want to miss seeing Poirier’s ‘last dance.’
“And it’ll be tough to watch, you know, for all the fans to watch him lay the gloves down in New Orleans. Hopefully he can make that happen this summer. And I’ll be there most likely,” Chandler added. But the question on everyone’s mind is: Who will Poirier fight in his farewell fight? Maybe Chandler? Well, a UFC star has some inside info that he shared recently.
Beneil Dariush reveals Dustin Poirier’s last opponent
There are a few good names Dustin Poirier could fight in his farewell fight. Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Michael Chandler himself, among others. If UFC lightweight star Beneil Dariush is correct, then the promotion has picked the best opponent possible for Poirier’s last fight— Max Holloway.
“My understanding is Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway are going to fight. That’s what I’m hearing. I don’t know if it’s 100 percent sealed and done, but that’s what I’m hearing,” ‘Benny’ told ‘Submission Radio’ in a recent interview.
Holloway is the BMF champion, which means Poirier’s last fight would be for a title. Not to mention, Holloway is among the top three greatest featherweights of all time and is a legend of ‘Diamond’s stature. Not to mention, both men are good old-fashioned brawlers, which means their clash is expected to be an absolute slug-fest. If Darius is correct, which is yet to be confirmed by the UFC.
