“Untouchable. Unreachable. And I think, unrepeatable,” said the man on the mic about
Mikaela Shiffrin, as the GOAT secured her
100th world cup win on 23rd February at the FIS Alpine World Cup 24-25, in Sestriere, Italy. The 29-year-old also had a unique way to celebrate the win, deciding to give back to the sport. In a recent partnership with the Share Winter Foundation, the Colorado native has launched the “MIK100: Reset the Sport” initiative that aims to raise $100,000 to enable that section of youth to learn skiing and snowboarding, which would have otherwise not been able to access these sports. In her initiative, she has found an ally in a $10.6 billion company.
Stifel is the official naming partner of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team and to celebrate the century of world cup wins won by the American skier, the 10.6 billion investment banking firm has decided to run a new national broadcast spot, digital campaigns, and print advertisements and also
donated a generous amount of $10,000 to the MIK100 initiative. But Shiffrin’s association with Share Winter goes back to October 2024.
The Olympian took to Instagram on 23rd October 2024, to announce that she was joining the ranks of Share Winter as an ambassador. For the Olympic champion, Share Winter’s mission means a lot– the foundation aims to make winter sports more accessible to groups that have historically not had access to the same. As the undisputed queen of snow clad mountains, this is right up her alley. Then came the historic 100th world cup win, and an Instagram post by the skiing legend was enough to trigger donations.
Celebrating this epic milestone, Shiffrin expressed her gratitude for the love she had received so far. She also took the opportunity to mention that she has donated $10,000 to Share Winter Foundation and encouraged her sponsors to do the same. That was enough cue for Stifel Financial and soon came the $10,000 donation. That’s one way to make the Olympic champion happy!
Looking at the pace at which donations are rolling in, it doesn’t seem that the $100,000 goal is too far off. With her commitment to resetting the sport and her passion to give back to the community that has uplifted her, the 29-year-old has secured her place in history– she will be remembered as more than just an amazing skier.
Mikaela Shiffrin’s legacy is beyond just competing on the mountain
The skiing legend with 100 world cup wins has gone far and beyond any of the skiers in the history of sport, and not just in the women’s division. Mikaela Shiffrin has already surpassed
Lindsey Vonn’s record of 82 World Cup wins, and with her 87th, Mikaela went past, arguably one of the greatest skiers of all time, Ingemar Stenmark. When you try to wrap your head around just how talented she is, you fail. The numbers speak for themselves.
Out of the 100, her 63 wins came in slalom, only three skiers, Ingemar Stenmark (86 wins), Lindsey Vonn (82 wins), and Marcel Hirscher (67 wins), have won more races in all skiing events combined than Shiffrin has won just in Slalom. She has the most wins per podium with a percentage of 64.52%. Despite these mind-boggling statistics, for the skiing champion, legacy goes beyond the mountain slopes. It lies in something bigger than that.
Simplifying her stance over legacy, the Olympian said, “‘legacy’ is about how we impact the people and world around us and the way we choose to exist in the landscape of all the things we love to do.” It’s not just empty words, and it’s also not just her Share Winter collaboration, there is another initiative that can be attributed to the phenomenal Mikaela Shiffrin.
Honoring her late father’s life and legacy, she started the Jeff Shiffrin Athlete Resiliency Fund, in partnership with U.S. Ski & Snowboard and a group of donors from six families. The JSARF’s biggest win came in 2020 when it raised more than $3,000,000 to keep afloat U.S. snowboarding and ski competition schedule as COVID-19 adversely affected many other funding sources.
While we think of Mikaela Shiffrin as a queen who has practically dominated the slopes throughout her career, other equally admirable things about her explain why she is on a league of her own and that no one else compares.
