Mistaken for Justin Thomas in Awkward Moment, PGA Tour Pro Has 4-Word Response to Savage Comparisons

For years, golf fans have been familiar with J.T. as a name synonymous with Justin Thomas, the two-time PGA Champion and Ryder Cup star. But for one PGA Tour pro, those two letters have led to more than a few cases of mistaken identity. J.T. Poston, a three-time PGA Tour winner, has often found himself in the shadow of his more famous initials-sharing counterpart. From fans confusing their scorecards to broadcasters slipping up, the mix-up has been a running joke in the golf world. It all started in 2022, when ESPN Radio host Freddie Coleman mistook Justin Thomas, for J.T. Poston, who had just won the John Deere Classic at the time.

“It’s always cool to talk to a two-time major champ when it comes to golf, especially when the golfer has gotten a lot of attention when it comes to on and off the course. He is Justin Thomas,” Coleman said during the broadcast.

To this, Poston could only respond with an awkward laugh: “Guys, there might be a mix-up. This is J.T. Poston, not Justin Thomas. I get this all the time, the other J.T. But, uh, I don’t know you might have to ask him.”

While the mix-up initially sparked laughter, it also raised an interesting question—how does Poston truly feel about constantly being measured against one of golf’s biggest stars?

Now, two years after the mix-up first gained attention, Poston has finally responded to another brutal comparison thrown his way. Speaking at the 2025 Valspar Championship—where he finished with a T22, sitting at -2 under par overall—the 31-year-old addressed the constant association with Thomas—this time with a hilarious candid reaction that is bound to stir conversations.

After a young fan put him on the spot with a brutally honest question at the Wyndham Championship—asking how it felt to be “the other J.T.”—Poston finally addressed the moment again in an interview with Golf Channel. The golfer not only took the mix-up in stride but doubled down on his response, proving he’s more than comfortable in his own skin.

“Hey, I love it,” Poston said, recalling the unexpected question. “You know, he had his question, and it was out of left field and caught me off guard, but, no, I mean, I stand by what I said, you know? If I’m in the same sentence as Justin Thomas in the golf world, then I’m doing something right.” This good-humored response showed J.T. about taking a joke but also displaying admiration for his fellow competitors without hesitation.

Adding to the fun, they showed a picture of J.T. Poston, his caddie Aaron Flener, and Justin Thomas sporting a customized caddie bib at the Valspar Championship, proudly repping “The Other J.T.” instead of the traditional last name placement. The gesture reflected Poston’s ability to embrace the humor in the situation while continuing to carve out his own identity on the PGA Tour. However, is Justin Thomas himself aware of this particular inside-golf joke?

Justin Thomas’s response to “other JT”

Back in 2022, when the incident with J.T. Poston first happened in the ESPN interview, the golfer took it as good humor and even posted about it on X. “Just had the ultimate #playbetter call with @ESPNRadio this morning. They thought I was @JustinThomas34 coming on the show. Being introduced as a two-time major champ was pretty cool though!! #theotherJT

While no one likes to be mistaken for someone else, J.T. Poston definitely relishes the fact that he is mistaken for someone he admires and respects in the golf world. His tweet had definitely fans loving the golfer for his attitude, but what was the real icing on top was J.T. himself replying to that post. “If that’s the case, can I borrow those fed ex points and the W last week? congrats bro!!!”

Justin Thomas is known for his endearing personality and he definitely did not miss out on Poston’s humour with that reply. Currently, at the 2025 Valspar Championship, Justin Thomas is making a pretty good comeback at T7 by the end of the 3rd round. He even hit a career-low 65. Hopefully, he can snag the title.
