The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and a few umpires’ calls that spark outrage. That’s precisely what’s been going on for over a century. Human errors have always been part of baseball’s charm, even though they prompt controversies. But now, it seems we are stepping into a new era. Or one would say, the Digital Era. And MLB got the taste of it with the introduction of robot umpires gradually reshaping the game, preventing the occurrence of bad calls with machine-like precision. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, however, believes that the robot umpires have sparked debates between the players and umpires.
Like it or not, the sport is definitely going through a major revamp. Are we ready to embrace this new era of sport?
Since robot umpires were tested during spring training, players appeared to have gained more control. They can easily challenge umpires’ decisions, judging whether they called it a strike or a ball. However, when asked about how umpires feel about the introduction of these robot umpires, Manfred said, “We obviously had to make an agreement with them to use it, and we made the agreement. I will say this: I think that they were more receptive to using it on every pitch because nobody knows what he would have called it.”
He also admitted having discussions with the umpires, who have agreed to use it on every pitch. But he overserved a specific problem: “The problem with the challenge system is it points out when you’re wrong. And I think nobody likes to be shown, in front of 48,000 people, they just missed the pitch.”
Players certainly don’t want robot umpires implemented this way, even though umpires are prepared to accept the change. The reason is that in case there is an automated strike zone, the designated catcher might move away. And that often creates a ripple effect throughout the game, changing the roles of every player. Specifically, if an offensive pitcher replaces a framing pitcher due to role changes, then framing pitchers might lose their jobs. So, it’s a little unfair, and that’s why there has been a conflict of interest between the umpires and players.
While the debate around the robot umpires continues, let’s take a look at how this new technology can bring massive improvements to the sport.
Robotic umpires—a boon or bane?
It goes without saying that the robotic umpires will have many benefits, even as America’s favourite pastime undergoes significant changes in the years to come. First of all, the use of robotic umpires delivers results accurately and consistently. The use of 3D imaging and advanced sensors will help to detect the events quickly and make calls with precision. Hopefully, determining balls and strikes is not the only advantage of robotic umpires, right?
Absolutely! The robotic umpires can negate human emotions, crowd sentiments, and personal bias, while delivering accurate outcomes based on the evidence acquired and set guidelines. But that’s not all! With the robotic umpires as decision makers, it will be easier for the baseball players to concentrate on the game rather than losing their concentration due to unjustified calls. Thus, it paves the way for a much better player and a better fan experience.
However, no technology is without limitations, and the same may happen with the robotic umpires. Any sort of technical glitch or error might affect the game outcomes and even lead to calling off the game. Furthermore, with technology integration, the loss of human elements will reduce the intensity of games and debates, potentially leading to a loss of interest.
