Morgan Charrière aka ‘The Last Pirate’ has fought all odds and even the legal system somewhat to be where he is today. “When I started MMA back in the day, it wasn’t even legal in my country,” is what he had said to UFC and he knows the struggle of pursuing his dreams.
Before UFC, the 29-year-old had more followers than some of the champions in the promotion. But how? ‘The Last Pirate’ has an interesting story for it. So let’s dive in to see how he represented his roots in a fight that was not even legal in his country at one point. And how he gained such a huge following.
Where is Morgan Charriere from? Religion, Ethnicity & More
The 20-10-1 featherweight star was born on October 26, 1995, in Poissy in the Yvelines department in Île-de-France. From a young age, he loved the idea of combat sports (and anime) and started Judo at the tender age of 7. And if you ask him what MMA means to him, well; it means everything. He said to UFC, “I had to push through a lot to earn my spot here, and now I’ll be able to show to the world that I’m one of the best and that everything is possible if you put your mind to it.” He sure does show it, especially through his walkout songs. Charriere has used the song, ‘Dolce Camara’ by Booba feat.SDMin as well as ‘I’m Not Afraid’ by Eminem.
Not much is known about his religion but he sure worships MMA. The Frenchman has been fighting since he started Judo and after that, he shifted to MMA at 17 and he loved it. He expressed to UFC, “I resolve the problems that my opponent brings, and letting my inner monster go out makes me feel alive. I love to feel the adrenaline and face my fears.”
Well, it surely paid off. Just take the example of his fight against Manolo Zecchini, where he stood hugging his abs to get back up from the canvas, but ‘The Last Pirate’ took a calculated step towards him. After that, it was just a flurry of well-organized front kicks and soccer kicks with all the brutality he could muster. It ended the Italian’s composure and launched him onto the fence. This is how Charriere’s UFC debut started.
Fight Journey and MMA stats
Fans were cheering and screaming his name in the Accor Arena where he had his debut UFC fight in 2023. For some fans, it was the introduction to ‘The Last Pirate’ and an entry into the fandom. For others who knew him before UFC, it was their good old ‘The Last Pirate’ showing his destructive prowess.
“When I reached 100,000 subscribers, I had more than some UFC champions,” Charriere informed The Independent ahead UFC outing, against Jose Mariscal. Before UFC, he had done odd jobs like deliveries, and working in restaurants and supermarkets. It’s hard juggling a basic job and practicing MMA simultaneously but social media came to the rescue.
MMA’s legalization in France was a lingering topic in 2017 and the sport was on the verge of replacing Pancrase—a less raw version of MMA. However, this change did not happen for three more years but the Frenchman had seen it coming. He had already decided that after MMA became legal and UFC arrived in Paris, they would be signing him and there were no other options he would give the UFC. This is why he prepared beforehand and started social media. He was already thinking ahead and his following blossomed just around the time France legalized MMA and he caught the attention of the biggest streamers in the nation.
From starting at ASV 6: Diouf vs Benzha then reaching Cage Warriors to now UFC, his journey was truly full of pressure and hard work. He was even the featherweight Cage Warriors world champion and now strives to be the UFC champ someday. And the nickname? Well his father, who he considers being his hero, chose it for him.
While speaking to The Independent, he said, “My dad chose the name Morgan because of the first pirate to govern Jamaica, Henry Morgan. That thing with pirates stuck with me, and as a fan of the anime One Piece, I liked the idea of the fear of a pirate – finding a country, taking everything, getting the gold, and going home. At the time, I was always fighting on enemy territory.”
The fighter with a bachelor’s degree in Sports and an associate degree in business Unit Management will step into the cage against Nathaniel Wood for his 4th fight in UFC. Do you think he will bag another win after his last victory over Gabriel Miranda? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
