2-10. That’s the Suns’ record this month. Yes, it’s a shocker. What’s even worse is that only the Hornets have had more losses. It’s not surprising that the frustration from the fanbase has reached a boiling point. Just like any fan of an underperforming team, they tried staying hopeful for a rebuild but nothing changed. Now, reports are circulating about a growing call for change that could shift the course of the franchise. Fire Mike Budenholzer! But that didn’t just come from the fans.
According to Forbes insider Evan Sidery, some unnamed executives from opposing teams believe the Suns could be ready to take the bold step. “After firing Monty Williams and Frank Vogel after one year, some rival executives believe Mike Budenholzer will meet the same fate this offseason from owner Mat Ishbia,” he wrote on X.
The Suns parted ways with head coach Williams after their loss to the Nuggets in the 2023 Conference Semifinals, and Frank Vogel was brought in to take over. However, when Vogel couldn’t deliver, he was also dismissed after the team’s elimination by the Timberwolves in the first round of last season’s playoffs. Clearly, majority owner Matt Ishbia is impatient. He has made it known that his only goal is to bring a championship title to the team. But with how things are going right now, it seems unlikely that Budenholzer will even be able to get the franchise to the postseason tournament. So, the speculation is that he might have to go through the same fate as his predecessors.

Sidery further added, “Phoenix has one of the worst defenses with only an average offense featuring Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.” The Suns have now dropped to the eleventh spot in the West with a 27-32 record. Even the offensive efforts of Durant and Booker haven’t been enough to lift the team out of their slump. KD has been averaging 26.9 points, while Booker added 26.4 points per game. But the lack of depth in their defense has been a major issue, leaving them vulnerable and allowing opponents to take advantage. With Budenholzer unable to fix the situation so far, there’s a growing sense of determination in the locker room that KD pointed out.
Amid Mike Budenholzer’s future uncertainty, Kevin Durant sheds light on Suns’ locker room dynamics
If you think there’s no hope left for the Suns this season, you might be mistaken. At least, that’s how Durant sees it. The 36-year-old feels the team hasn’t hit rock bottom yet. There’s still a hunger to win. When asked in the locker room interview after their 116-124 loss against the Pelicans if there’s still fight left in the squad, he confidently said, “Most definitely. I feel like everybody wants to win.”
Giving a clearer picture of what’s happening behind the scenes, he added, “I feel like everybody’s p—– off. When you see bad body language, that means people care. And guys care in this locker room, and I can tell they’re p—–.”
So, it appears like the team is charged up. Now, Mike Budenholzer could really use that energy to his advantage. Time is running out. He needs to act quickly if he wants to secure his future in Phoenix before it’s too late.
