NFL Announces Quadruple Boost to Jerry Jones’ Cowboys After Big $18M Highest-Paid Deal With KaVontae Turpin

Jerry Jones moves like a man who’s always three steps ahead—or at least, that’s what he’d like everyone to believe. This offseason, he’s been at it again, reworking Dak Prescott’s contract to free up a cool $36.6M in cap space, and locking down defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa with an $80M deal. But in classic Jerry fashion, he’s playing it smart in free agency as well, landing Javonte Williams on a savvy one-year, $3.5M deal.

So, Prescott’s contract restructuring? Check. Free agency? It’s still going. What else is remaining now? Oh yeah, the 2025 NFL draft. Speaking of their first-round pick, the Cowboys hold the No. 12 pick—thanks to their 7-10 track record in the 2024 season. Now that the NFL draft is less than a couple of months ahead, JJ and Co. just got a treasure chest of draft ammo.

On Wednesday, the NFL released its list of compensatory picks for the 2025 NFL draft. The league rewarded the Cowboys with four compensatory picks. Adding to their draft capital, America’s team gained three fifth-round picks (170, 171, 174), and one sixth-round pick (211 overall). Uh-huh! A shopping cart full of rookies!

Honestly, the Cowboys deserved those compensatory picks. According to the league, if a team loses more (or better, to be specific) free agents than it signs in a year, the NFL throws them a bone with some extra draft picks. With that being said, the Cowboys’ offseason lost almost half of their roster in free agency with 12 players departing from Dallas. The result? Those 4 compensatory picks.

That means Jerry Jones and the Cowboys will now have a busy day three in the draft, considering they now have seven selections between rounds five through seven. However, the team will not have a draft selection in the fourth round. The reason? Well, Dallas traded with the Carolina Panthers in the last season for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and a seventh-round selection.

That said, including the 4 draft picks boost, Jerry Jones’ Cowboys have 10 draft picks in 2025. Besides the 4 compensatory picks, the Cowboys have No. 12 pick in the first, second, third, and sixth rounds, including a 31st pick in the seventh round. Safe to say that JJ probably wants to build a solid O-line in 2025 after re-signing WR and kick returner KaVontae Turpin.

KaVontae Turpin snags a lucrative deal with Jerry Jones’ Cowboys

Looks like Jerry Jones is in the mood of throwing cash in free agency this year. First, the Cowboys offered a four-year monstrous contract extension worth $80M to their defensive end, Osa Odighizuwa. And now? Well, their kick returner, KaVontae Turpin, was all set to become a restricted free agent in 2025. But nope, JJ didn’t let that happen.

Turpin just snagged a three-year contract extension to stay in Dallas through 2028. His contract terms? Well, it’s enough to list the 28-year-old Turpin in the highest-paid players. The Cowboys re-signed Turpin on a $18 million deal. The contract includes $5.5 million fully guaranteed.

The Cowboys said on their website that his contract extension could make Turpin the highest-paid special teams player in NFL history. The guy joined the America’s team back in 2022 season after making a splash in the USFL. Turpin mostly played the wide receiver for the team having recorded career-high 420 yards receiving with two TDs last season.

Besides Turpin, the Cowboys also re-signed their safety, Markquese Bell, on a three-year deal worth $12 million. No wonder Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are losing their purse in free agency. However, one question’s still looming over the Cowboys’ fans’ head: when will JJ offer a contract extension to Micah Parsons?
