The San Francisco 49ers are retooling their roster after an embarrassing 2024 season. This offseason, they perhaps became one team that was hit hard in free agency, especially in Deebo Samuel’s case. However, amid all this, one of the biggest questions surrounding the franchise is: What comes next for Brock Purdy?
We all know the 49ers won’t move on from Brock Purdy, at least for now. But the big question now is how much the quarterback will get paid. Is he worth $50 million? Or $60 million? Or more or less? And if not any of these, will the team try to secure him on a more team-friendly deal to keep their roster stacked with talent?
That’s where the debate is heating up! Whatever the conclusion is, an NFL legend has one advice for Purdy to follow before it.
During a new episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, NFL legend Julian Edelman talked about Brock Purdy’s situation and the approach he should follow. In the podcast, the host asserted that Purdy is trying to get a massive deal and the 49ers “have publicly stated we’re not handing out cash like we used to.”
So, per the question, is there any resentment if a player signs a deal that doesn’t match his expectations? To this, Edelman has a simple solution – always choose your team first!
While explaining his points, the former Patriots’ legend shared an example of Sam Darnold, who moved to Seattle recently. He said, “For instance, you look at like (Sam) Darnold. He goes, and he signs with Seattle. I wonder what was the number that Minnesota signed him for because he’s basically playing a one-year deal with a team that he doesn’t know (with a defensive coach), and he’s going to try to hit free agency again. I would have taken probably 6-7 million less to have my one-year deal with Justin Jefferson and (Jordan) Addison and a coach that knows how to call plays for me.”
During his time with the Patriots, Julian Edelman joked that he always felt resentment towards Bill Belichick every time he signed a contract. But he also understood the bigger picture. Edelman always took team-friendly deals despite earning a whopping $46 million from his NFL career because he knew his best chance at success was in New England.
Yes! Winning mattered more to him.
He pointed things could have gone south quickly if he had gone to another team – coaching staff changes, terrible seasons, and fewer opportunities off the field. So, for Brock Purdy, Edelman emphasized smart athletes understand that inning is everything. “I think most of the smart athletes get winning trumps everything because when your career ends, you’ll get more deals and the deals now on social media alone are seven figure deals. So, I think players should really take a look at that.”
It’s true that when you win, your value lasts beyond your playing career. The endorsement deals, the business opportunities – those don’t go away. Hence, giving strong advice to quarterback Brock Purdy, he made it clear: taking the biggest paycheck isn’t always the best move. Winning builds a legacy, and that pays off forever.
How much can the 49ers give Brock Purdy in his new contract?
While a contract extension isn’t locked in yet for Brock Purdy, talks are happening with the 49ers. Both sides want to get a deal done before the 2025 season. Could it happen before the draft? Maybe. But as cited by FOX Sports’s Jordan Schultz, “there’s not a rush.”
At one point, there was talk that he could surpass Dak Prescott’s $60 million yearly deal. But it was only possible when Brock Purdy had “another stellar campaign and deep playoff run.”
However, that seems unlikely now. Still, per Schultz, sources say he could land “anywhere from $50-$55 million, or potentially more.”
Well, if the 49ers’ history tells us anything, this won’t be quick. Remember Nick Bosa’s deal? It was finalized the day before the 2023 season. Brandon Aiyuk’s? Took months. Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel? Same story.
However, an undisclosed GM believes Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are determined to get this done. Hence, it remains to be seen when it will be. But one thing is certain: The number will be tricky. However, Brock Purdy’s payday might come soon with the salary cap rising and quarterback deals getting bigger every year.
