NFL Rumors: GM to Use Deshaun Watson Mistake as Lesson for Myles Garrett as Browns Change Trade Stance

Myles Garrett’s wish to win a Super Bowl may not come true, at least for now. 8 seasons of Garrett’s frustration finally exploded on the Browns’ faces when their 6-time Pro Bowlers requested a trade away, citing a “desire to win.” Like winning is not something Garrett has ever experienced as a team in Cleveland. Clearly, only 2 trips to the postseason aren’t enough to keep a winner like Garrett fighting. After the Browns finished 3-14 last season, you could say Garrett realized ‘this fight is not worth his time.’ No matter how many Pro Bowls he keeps winning, the result on the gridiron will always hand him an L.
But it seems his wish to pursue a new chapter that can add a Lombardi to his resume needs to wait. With 31 NFL franchises all showing a desire to land Garrett no matter what it takes, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini has some interesting pieces of insight. Let’s just say this latest scoop is not something that will be music to Garrett’s ears. Hopping on the Rich Eisen Show, the NFL insider claimed, “I know at this point that the Browns do not want to move him. They’ve gotten calls from teams in the NFC, they’ve got calls from the teams in the AFC. And they’ve been told all the same thing: we’re not moving him for now.”
See, it might not be too simple for anyone to get their hands on Garrett just like that. Keeping Russini’s comments in mind, the Browns also had a similar stance when they saw Garrett requesting a trade. Their GM, Andrew Berry, once said to the Athletic, “We always have a really good and direct two-way communication with our players, and we feel really good about Myles. Obviously, as a big piece of our future. We’re looking forward to him being on the field.” As for the Browns, they have all the leverage on Garrett’s future.

He still has two seasons left on his 5-year, $125M contract signed back in 2020. There are also cap hits of $19.7M this season and $20.4M in 2026. So, anyone looking for Garrett might have to break their draft capital in order to persuade the Browns into trading him. Like Russini herself only added—anything close to the Deshaun Watson trade in 2022 might help in landing the 4-time All-Pro defender.

The browns could use the Deshaun Watson trade formula to trade away Myles Garrett

Well, it’s basically a National Football League disaster how far the Browns dug deep to land Deshaun Watson. They fought off the likes of the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers to win Watson’s signature. At that time, it seemed like they had just won a war, considering 4 teams were auctioning for Watson. However, now that the trade has flopped completely, those picks Cleveland gave up to lure Watson away from Houston have sabotaged their franchise. And now they are also expecting some other franchise to do the same if they really want to get Myles Garrett.

That’s what Russini believes could bring the Browns to at least have conversations about trading their one-time Defensive Player of the Year. “I think we could see some movement if there is any if Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski wind up. Let’s say maybe taking a page out of the way, Houston did it with Deshaun Watson where it was essentially an auction, right? where it was everybody put together their best offers, and at the end they made a decision of okay, this is what we’re going to do.” Considering Garett’s numbers, teams could actually give up a lot to bring the star pass-rusher into their city.

In his 8 seasons at Cleveland, Garrett has over 100 sacks, over 350 combined tackles, and 20 forced fumbles. So, it’s not like he doesn’t bring something extraordinary to the table. Maybe it won’t be like the Watson trade, where the Browns basically emptied their house, giving up a slew of first-round and second-picks (third-round and fourth-round also). However, they could really cash in on Garrett while he is still hot in the market. See, this would probably be a sacrifice for the greater good. Yes, they will miss their star pass-rusher. But at least they can address some holes in their roster. Because it’s a team game at the end of the day. And holding on to one player when you still don’t have a QB would be very amateurish.
