Grand Slam Track, a high-profile new series backed by Michael Johnson, will host its first-ever meet this Friday in Kingston, Jamaica. With $30 million in funding and 48 of the world’s best athletes committed, the league will probably rival the Diamond League. For years, the Diamond League has been the go-to stage for the world’s best. But now, Grand Slam Track is stepping in, and the competition is real. And amidst its backdrop, Diamond League CEO Petr Stastny has something to say!!
American fans will see a big shift in how they watch the Diamond League. After eight years with NBC, FloTrack will take over broadcast rights in the U.S., making it a more expensive option for viewers. CEO Petr Stastny shared with LETSRUN.COM, “Not always easy… it is not always easy to get attractive slots for live coverage on free-to-air.” With 16 events across the season, finding suitable coverage has been tough.
“Now with the move to FloSports, we will not have that day on free-to-air, but it also was not a really satisfactory situation,” Stastny admitted after they closed their tie with NBC. While U.S. fans will see a price increase, in Germany, coverage shifts from Sky Deutschland to free-to-air ARD and ZDF. “For us, it’s the overall picture that counts… we have 150 markets to consider… some with free access, others behind a paywall.”
