Golf is a game of constant ups and downs, where the tables can turn at any moment. Just look at the recent struggles of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Despite Thomas’ impressive 15 PGA Tour wins, he hasn’t quite been able to find his winning form lately. His last victory came at the 2022 PGA Championship, and since then, he’s been chasing that elusive trophy.
Meanwhile, Spieth, with 13 PGA Tour victories to his name, hasn’t tasted victory since the 2022 RBC Heritage. Both champions have found themselves in a bit of a rut, but as we all know in golf, things can turn around in the blink of an eye. After months of watching their performances dip, fans of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth wondered if they’d ever return to their dominant form. But just like a seasoned golfer who knows how to read the course, both players are quietly making moves that could signal a big comeback.
Especially Justin Thomas. He has been phenomenal this season, appearing in four events so far, and finishing in the top 10 in two of them. In fact, at the American Express, he lost the title by just two strokes. Even though both have been having solid seasons, the real buzz isn’t about Justin Thomas or Jordan Spieth. Instead, another big name in golf is making headlines, with expectations of a major comeback. Yes, it is Daniel Berger.
In one of the recent episodes of the First Cut Podcast, Rick Gehman said, “We’ve been monitoring this comeback. He’s been back for about nine months or so started out playing a handful of events and kind of working back into it, but the form seems to be there and anything we see with Daniel Berger, always comes with plenty of confidence.” Very sternly DuCharme added, “He’s going to be a factor especially when we get into that Florida swing. Do you think Cognizant Classic? He’s probably gonna win there.” It was indeed an early prediction, but who can help, after the stunning performance he made?
Why would he not be expected to make a comeback after the stellar show he put up at the WM Phoenix Open on Sunday? He carded five birdies finished with a 4-under, and landed himself at T2. So close! However, his story is pretty much similar to that of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. His last win came at the 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and has not been doing very great since then.
However, Greg Ducharme made sure to point out how it did not begin very well.
Daniel Berger’s performance at the WM Phoenix Open
He began the round with an even par, and it went on until he carded his first birdie on the seventh hole. “Number seven, that was vibrant. I mean, that thing, this was a high draw to a back left-hole location. They were wondering if Daniel Berger could hit a high enough to stop it. If he flew it over the bunker, And he turned it in there beautifully to about 10 feet and rolled that thing in and he went from being a guy, that’s kinda out of contention, to being the guy that all of a sudden, is putting in pressure on Ryder Cup or Thomas Detry,” he added.
Daniel Berger did something that doesn’t happen often in sports—a two-year break from the game. When he last played before stepping away, LIV Golf was still in its early days, with no one sure about its future. Fast forward to his return, and the PGA Tour had already struck a deal with LIV, leaving Berger behind. His ranking took a huge hit, dropping 500 spots in the Official World Golf Rankings. All of this came down to a nagging back injury that sidelined him for 19 months during a critical time in his career. Here’s how it all went down.
Berger appeared in four events so far, including the WM Phoenix Open. Out of which, he missed the cut in two of them, and finished at T21 in the American Express. So the beginning was not as great. And that was not all, he was also seen struggling with the putter, but the three birdies in the back nine have made it clear that he is not anymore.
