It looks like Quincy Wilson is hitting the ground running for 2025, and there’s no stopping him now. In his first 400m race of the season at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston, he showed the competition exactly what he’s made of. Facing off against seasoned pros like Will Sumner (USA), Jereem Richards (TTO), and Zakithi Nene (RSA), Quincy didn’t just participate—he dominated. He finished with a strong 45.60. Moreover, we better not forget, he’s only 17 and just beat Richards, who’s 14 years older than him! This race just set the stage for a fantastic 2025 the Virginia native is sure to have!
Quincy Wilson became the youngest Olympic medal winner in history after Team USA won 4x400m gold at the 2024 Olympic games. During the first men’s 4x400m relay heat of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Quincy Wilson proved his worth by obtaining a 47.3-second run in his opening leg which enabled Team USA’s final qualification, and finally team won gold by 3:14.84. However, in a surprising move, Quincy was benched for the final round and Rai was chosen instead of him, with Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, Rai, and Christopher Bailey taking over.
Though it was a tough moment for the 17-year-old, he didn’t let it get the better of him. Instead, he showed up to cheer for his teammates as they secured the gold. Recently, any rumors of tension between Quincy and his teammates were put to rest, with Olympic medalists confirming there were no hard feelings after Quincy’s snub.
Fast forward to today, and Rai Benjamin is still putting in work. At the 2025 New Balance Grand Prix, he posted a personal best of 32.21 in the men’s 300m, beating out Vernon Norwood (32.39) and Matthew Boling (32.82). After the race, Rai discussed Quincy Wilson as he recalled their Paris days and now watched him performing at an impressive level.
Rai Benjamin mentors Quincy Wilson
Rai shared, “We spoke to him last night. He’s just way too wise for his age. He has a great family, great management. It’s amazing watching him do his thing so young.” When asked how he’s helping Quincy look ahead to the LA Games, Rai said, “I give Vernon more credit than he gives himself. Vernon really nurtured him through the Games. He’s like a big brother to all of us. Quincy looks up to him. I try to give him a point or two as well, but with young athletes, you don’t want to overwhelm them. You give them bits and pieces, but keep your distance. What I see? It’s all love.” For Quincy, the sky’s the limit. He’s still young, but his victory in that 400m race proves he’s ready to take on the world. His Olympic gold was just the beginning.
As for Quincy Wilson’s take on his teammates, he opened up in an interview with The Stride Report, revealing his feelings about competing alongside athletes, “I’ve never raced any of these guys so it was new for me. I’ve seen some people like Rai, Vernon I can’t wait to see what they do in this 300m.”
Although the 17-year-old Quincy Wilson has achieved many larger-than-life victories already, it is clear that he is ready to embark upon a whole new phase of his track and field career. The outstanding results from the 2024 Paris Olympics stand as a sure indicator that he will dominate the competition at the forthcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. We will sure be around to watch him shatter his own records!
